A St. Joseph man has been charged in connection with stealing a truck from the HyVee parking lot.

Coty Ryan O’Connell, 30 is charged in Buchanan County with a felony for first degree tampering with motor vehicle.

According to court documents, on Wednesday O’Connell was seen on security video taking the car keys from a person’s lunch box at the HyVee grocery store located at 201 N. Belt.

“The defendant then walked outside the store, found the vehicle the keys went to and started the vehicle, a 2005 Nissan Titan truck,” said Officer Jeff Pearl with the St. Joseph Police Department. “The defendant drove off in the vehicle taking it without the rightful owners consent or knowledge.”

On Friday around noon witnesses reported seeing O’Connell driving the stolen truck.

“The stolen truck was recovered at 28th and Commercial with the defendants identification still in the vehicle,” Pearl said. “The defendant was arrested at his home address.”

O’Connell is currently being held on $20,000 bond.  An arraignment is set for Friday.
