About 18,000 people in Johnson County, Kansas received a false tornado warning Wednesday evening during a severe thunderstorm watch.
Officials with Johnson County Emergency Management say the automated message was sent because of a glitch in the “NotifyJoCo” software. After consulting with the software vendor, found the problem.
Officials believe it was related to a tornado warning that was issued in Johnson County, Texas at about the same time.
A few minutes after the alert was issued Johnson County officials posted this message on Twitter: “There is NO tornado warning in Johnson County, KS. We are currently investigating why NotifyJoCo message was sent out. NO TORNADO WARNING.”
