Evelyn A. Loyd
1922-2016

eveEvelyn A. Loyd, 94, of Hiawatha, died peacefully Monday evening, April 4, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha, where she had been a resident a few weeks.
Evelyn was born February 26, 1922, at Denton, Kansas, one of five daughters born to Charles and Lucy May Swartz Gish and had lived in the northeast Kansas area her entire life. She grew up at Denton, attended grade school there prior to graduating Denton High School with the class of 1939. Evelyn graduated Highland Community Junior College with an associate’s degree prior to attending Kansas State University for a year.
Mrs. Loyd was a longtime member of the Powhattan United Methodist Church and UMW of the Church. While her children were young, she was a 4-H sewing leader. Also a member of Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion Auxiliary; NeoCentury Study Club; Grand Prairie FCE Unit; and the Grand Prairie Club. She also enjoyed getting together with several ladies and quilting for the Brown County Historical Society. One of her greatest joys was making wedding dresses for her daughter and grand-daughter.
She was married to Carroll H. Loyd, October 30, 1943, at her parent’s home at Denton. They farmed and raised livestock near Powhattan until retiring in 1983. She also drove a school bus for Powhattan Schools for 7 years. They moved to Hiawatha to make their home in 2001. Through the years, they enjoyed taking trips with the family. He died July 8, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son Max in 2004; three sisters: Harriet Myers, Elva Mae Booth, and Mildred Eby.
Survivors include three children: Marjorie Loyd, and Duane Loyd, both of Topeka, Carolyn (John) Andres of Hiawatha; a daughter in law Georgia Loyd of rural Hiawatha; a sister Doris Dollar of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren: Matthew (Allison) Loyd of Tulsa, OK, Lisa (Jeff) Meyer of Ottawa, Bradley (Ashley) Andres of the family farm north of Powhattan; 7 great-grandchildren: Madeline Loyd; Jotham, Josiah, and Elizabeth Meyer; Ava, Cooper and Brentley Andres..
A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Powhattan United Methodist Church, with Reverend Priscilla Davies officiating. Interment will follow at the Powhattan Cemetery.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. Friday, where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 that evening.

Linda Jo Phillips
1966-2016

Phillips, Linda, obitphotoLinda Jo Phillips, 49, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born July 5, 1966 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Linda worked at Pappy’s as a waitress and served in the Air National Guard.
She was preceded in death by her aunt, Penny Hayes; and dear friend, Scottie Groce.
Survivors include son, Jeremy Phllips; daughter, Ashley Phillips; mother, Pat Phillips (Cecil), all of St. Joseph, Missouri; father, Richard Phillips (Linda), Pittsburgh, Missouri; sister, Barb McQuiston; grandson, Kamdyn Phillips; fiancé, Rick Terhune; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen Y. Mix
1929-2016

She was born April 4, 1929 in Wathena, Kansas.
Helen worked at the Hotel Robidoux for 25 years as an Assistant Auditor and the Boston House and Window Cleaning for 20 years as a Bookkeeper. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman E. Mix; parents, Robert and Ruby (Wilkinson) Dinning; brother, Robert; and sister-in-law, LaVonne.
Survivors include nephews and nieces, Doyle Dinning, Wathena, Kansas, Mark Dinning (Allison), Amazonia, Missouri, Bruce Dinning (JoAnna), St. Joseph, Missouri and Lois Dinning, Wathena. Kansas. Cartlon Root
1944-2016

Carlton Root 71, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 in Saint Joseph, MO health care center. He was born October 1, 1944 in Atchison, KS, son of Mary and Horace Root. He graduated from Atchison high school and worked at Blush Mize for 25 years, & Golden Star for 19 years. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Carlton was preceded in death by wife, Patricia Root, his parents, four brothers, Edward, Orlando, Raymond and Gerald Root. Survivors include, daughter Linda Oliver of Mesa, AZ., step-daughter, Michelle White, step-sons, Richard “Mearl” O’Dell Dallas O’Dell, and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Rev. James Barnett officiating, The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Edith Mabel McNett
1943-2016

Edith Mabel McNett 72, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday April 5, 2016 at her home. She was born April 30, 1943 in San Jose, California daughter of Helen & Donald Cunningham. She graduated from Lafayette High School 1961, and worked as a Secretary. She enjoyed fishing, watching all sports and football, crossword puzzles, gardening, and working in her yard. She especially loved her grandchildren and family gatherings. She was a Christian. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Donald, Robert G., and Jerry Cunningham, two sisters, Charlotte Calloway, and Nella M. Veale. She is survived by four daughters, Debra Kay McNett of St. Joseph, MO, Teresa Foster of Stewartsville, MO, Kimberly Ann McNett and Michele Rene McNett, and a son, Butch Edward (Sherry) McNett of Saint Joseph, MO, 9 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. The Family will receive friend from 6-7 PM Monday, with a celebration of Edith’s life to begin at 7:00 PM Monday, at the Rupp Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the American Lung Association.
