Mizzou drops series opener to Auburn 11-9

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – A seven-run fourth inning was not enough for Mizzou Baseball (17-14, 2-8) as it fell to Auburn (15-15, 3-7) 11-9, Thursday night at Taylor Stadium. Every Mizzou hitter either got a hit or an RBI in the fourth inning as the team mustered seven hits, including a pair of back-to-back triples. Auburn battled back into the game late and ended up handing Mizzou its eighth SEC defeat.

Sophomore OF Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) had a monster game at the plate, going two for five with three RBI and the second triple of his career. Harris now has seven multi-hit and six multi-RBI games this season. Harris is batting .400 with seven RBI during his current five game hitting streak. His three RBI tonight give him 24 this season, second most on the team.

Sophomore OF Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) went 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored. McGuire has now scored in eight straight games and pushed his hitting streak to seven games.

Senior 1B Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) continued his excellent season, driving in his team-leading 30th RBI of the year in the fourth inning by tripling to right field. The triple was his sixth of the season, the most in the SEC.

Freshman 2B Ian Nelson (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) collected a career-high three hits to pace Mizzou at the plate. He notched his eighth RBI of the year in the fourth inning. Nelson’s double paired with the double from McGuire gave Mizzou its eighth straight game with at least two doubles.

Mizzou continues its three-game series with game two on Friday (April 8) at 6:00 p.m.
