Road closed in Platte County due to train derailment

unnamed (5)PLATTE COUNTY – Crews have closed Route 45 between Farley, MO and 45 Spur following a train derailment which happened Tuesday, May 10.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said at least six to seven cars carrying timber left the tracks. Several pieces of large equipment have been brought in to remove the timber. It has been estimated to take up to two days to completely remove it.

Motorists should use the following alternate route: Route 45 to I-435 to Route 92 and back to Route 45.

BNSF Railway said 12 cars on a train derailed in northwest Missouri. No one was injured.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the derailment Tuesday evening in Platte County near Farley.

BNSF spokesman Andy Williams said seven cars went off the tracks and overturned, while five went off track but remained upright. They were part of a train with 88 cars and three locomotives heading from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City, Missouri.

Williams said none of the cars contained hazardous materials.

He said the cars were put back on the track early Wednesday and operations will resume after the tracks are inspected.
