Bearcats stay alive at MIAA Tourney with win over Missouri Southern

Northwest2013riggertSt. Charles, Mo. – It took until their last at-bat, but eighth seeded Northwest Missouri eliminated fifth seeded Missouri Southern 5-4 in the second round of the MIAA Baseball Tournament.

Missouri Southern struck first in the bottom of the third inning as Jacob Bryant singled down the right field line to drive in a run. One batter later Tyler Sutherland doubled to right field driving in two and making a 3-0 lead.

Northwest Missouri would cut into the lead in the top of the fifth as Nick Gotta singled down the right field line scoring Aaron Barratt and Jay Hrdlicka.

The Lions got a run back as Bryant singled through the right side to drive in Jackson Cain and increase the lead to 4-2. The Bearcats would come back and tie the game in the top of the seventh as Garrett Fort singled to drive in Nick Gotta then took advantage of an error to score.

NWMSU took their first lead of the game as James Holler singled to right field in the top of the ninth inning to score Garrett Fort.

For the Bearcats Nick Gotta went two for three with two runs driven in while James Holler went two for five with a run driven in. For the Lions Bryant finished two for three with two runs driven in while Cain went two for two with two runs scored.

On the mound Carson Smith pitched the final three innings striking out three and a allowing just one hit to pick up the win.

NWMSU will now face Missouri Western Saturday at 4 p.m. from Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
