Gerald “Smitty” Smith
1918-2016
HOLTON – Gerald “Smitty” Smith, 98, formerly of Whiting, died Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Medicalodges Jackson County.
He was born March 14, 1918 at Whiting, the son of William and Frances Norman Smith. Smitty’s mother died when he was nine. His father remarried and he was raised by his father and step-mother, Margaret Jones Smith. He attended grade school at South Reno School near Hutchinson and graduated from Whiting High School in 1937.
Smitty was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Netawaka. He worked in commercial building construction in Colorado Springs and semi-retired and moved back to Whiting in 1971. He owned and operated Smitty’s Body Shop at Whiting. He was also a farmer and stockman.
He married Marie Brown on August 5, 1940 at Yuma, Arizona. She died June 28, 1992. He married Hazel (Merritt) Rutherford on June 17, 1995 at Goff. She died May 17, 2011.
Smitty is survived by a daughter, Patricia Fink and her husband Edward, of Whiting, eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Private graveside services and inurnment will be at the Spring Hill Cemetery in Whiting. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church, and may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P. O. Box 1034, Holton, KS 66436.
Jerry Dean Travis
1945-2016
Jerry Dean Travis, 71, Maryville, Missouri passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at a local healthcare facility.
He was born January 10, 1945 in Lynwood, California
He was a graduate of Mound City High School and later received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from Northwest Missouri State University. Jerry was a teacher and coach for Craig High School, Southwest at Ludlow and Nodaway Holt High School.
He married Barbara Long and they later divorced.
Mr. Travis loved all sports and all outdoor activities and he loved to dance.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Dorothy (Littler) Travis; sister, Rosie Marrs; brother, Ralph Travis; and nephews, Eric McIntyre and Troy Marrs.
Survivors include son, Shane Travis, Mound City, Missouri; grandchildren, Collin and Delaney Travis; sisters, Sally McIntyre (Owen), Janice McCormick (Sonny), Martha Ideker (Ronald) and Linda Creed (Sam); brother-in-law, Russell Marrs; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside Farewell Services & Inurnment 10:00 A.M. Monday, Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City, Missouri. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Mount Hope Cemetery.
