UPDATE: Standoff over at home on Northside

(Update 5:49 p.m.) – A more than 4-hour long standoff at a home on the north side of St. Joseph ended without injury Tuesday evening.

“We responded on a call of somewhat of a domestic disturbance.  The information was very limited at the time but it did involve that there may be a couple of people in there and one may have been armed with a handgun,” Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department said. “Throughout the course of the day detectives did an investigation and it turned out that they developed information that there was a couple of people in there and that they did have active felony warrant for their arrest.”

As we previously reported, officers surrounded a home on the northwest corner of Linn.  Homes around that house were evacuated as a precaution and roads were closed off in the area.

“We began to try to make contact with them.  We didn’t receive any contact back,” Capt. Wilson said. “After obtaining the search warrant we took out the front window of the residence and we could obtain a view in there and established communication soon thereafter.  Two people voluntarily came out of the residence peacefully.”

A 45-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were arrested on warrants shortly after 5:30 p.m.

(Update 5 p.m.) – An anonymous tip led the St. Joseph Police Department to surround a home and shut down several roads on the north end of town.

St. Joseph Post’s Rob Horning was on scene at 2:55 p.m. and said he had a chance to speak with Capt. Jeff Wilson.

“Right now they’re taking precautionary measures.  They’re preparing themselves in case they have to go into the house,” Horning reported. “This originally started with some anonymous information that was communicated to them.  They’re not even sure there’s anybody at the house or if there’s anybody there.  They haven’t been able to make any contact.”

The initial report indicated the possibility of a man with a gun in the house located on the northwest corner of Linn and Prospect but shortly before 3 p.m. police said none of that has been confirmed.

Houses around the surrounded home have been evacuated as a precaution.

“We’re getting people around the area to safe areas,” Wilson said. “We haven’t even been able to confirm that there is anybody in there with a weapon.”

Roads are blocked of at Prospect and West Chestnut, Prospect at Cherry and Dewey at Linn.

As of 5 p.m. police were still on scene.
