Several defendants charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Skylar Powell are out on bond ahead of court appearances slated in the case.
As we previously reported, five people were charged after Powell was found dead in the 2200 block of Calhoun last month in St. Joseph.


According to online court documents, Monday preliminary hearings scheduled for Ashten Surritte, 19 and Kyle Smith 25 were continued to July 6 at 11 a.m. Kyle Smith is charged with a felony of possession of a controlled substance and a felony for tampering with physical evidence. Surritte is charged with a felony for first-degree attempted robbery.
A 16-year-old charged in juvenile court with felony murder in the second-degree is slated for a hearing (correction) July 13. Because it’s a juvenile case very few details are being released at this time.
Two other defendants, Justin Smith, 20 and Dayne Matthews, 19 are slated to appear in court Monday, June 27 for a preliminary hearing at 3 p.m.
Justin Smith is charged with felonies for voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, Matthews is charged with felonies for possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.


According to court documents Kyle Smith, Justin Smith and Matthews are currently out on bond. Bond conditions listed include no contact with others charged in this incident. Court documents show Surritte remains behind bars on $20,000 bond.
