The St. Joseph Mustangs played their fourth extra inning game against Sedalia Thursday night as they outlasted the Bombers in 11 innings 4-3.
St. Joe is 3-1 against Sedalia in those extra inning games as they improve to 21-8 this season and 15-8 in the MINK League. The Mustangs lead the North Division by 1.5 games over Sedalia and Chillicothe.
St. Joseph’s college summer baseball team scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead that held up until the ninth.
Sedalia was down to its last strike in the ninth inning with one runner on base, but Louis Niemerg reached base on an error by Mustangs’ first baseman Louis Mele. It keep the inning alive and after a walk loaded the bases, Jonathon Ramon hit a double to clear the bases and tie the game.
The scored remained 3-3 until the 12th when the St. Joe’s Connor Bacon led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. After he was sacrificed to third and Sedalia intentionally walked Ozzie Rodriguez, Jeremiah Figueroa came through with a walk-off RBI single.
Mele and Bacon led the Mustangs offense Thursday night as they each had two hits. Mele had a double and a home run, while Bacon scored three times. Brett Marr also had two hits.
Jason Blanchard started for St. Joseph and threw 6.2 scoreless innings. He allowed just five hits and struck out two. Jake Van Vacter earned the win in relief as he worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless 11th inning.
The Mustangs remain at home Friday as they host Clarinda at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
