A former Benedictine College student has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after allegedly posting a threatening message last year on social media.
Colleen Carey, 18 from Colorado pleaded guilty July 7 in Atchison County, Kan. to a misdemeanor charge for harassment by telecommunication device. Carey had previously been charged with a felony for aggravated criminal threat.
The charge stems from an incident we reported to you in Nov. in which Carey was accused of using the social media site Yik Yak to post a threatening message. The post led the college to lock down dormitories and increase security presence around campus while police investigated.
Carey was sentenced to serve 1-year in Atchison County Jail but the sentence was suspended to 11 months of unsupervised probation.
