The St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their first loss against a non-league opponent Thursday as they were defeated by the Kansas City Monarchs 7-4 in 11 innings inside Phil Welch Stadium.
St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team has now lost four of six games and they’re 27-12 this season.
The Mustangs scored two unearned runs in the second inning and then Brady Anderson drove in two runs with sacrifice flies in the sixth and eighth innings. St. Joseph built a 4-2 lead going to the ninth, but Kansas City rallied off Mustangs’ reliever Jake Purl.
Purl, who had allowed just one earned run all summer, allowed two runs in the ninth inning and the Monarchs got to him in the 11th with three more runs. He suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed five runs on six hits in three innings of work.
The Mustangs had only five hits as Orencio Fisher finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Anderson, Ozzie Rodriguez and Davey Casciola added one hit each.
St. Joseph gets back into MINK League play Friday as they host the Branson Nationals at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
