A new Amelia Earhart museum is coming to Atchison, Kansas, and it will feature the last remaining 1935 Lockheed Electra L-10E, the airplane flown by the famed flyer.

Officials over the weekend announced that the airplane, nicknamed “Muriel,” will arrive in Atchison during the second week of August.  In a post on the “Muriel’s Journey” Facebook page officials said the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation is raising money to build a new museum to honor the historic pilot. Museum organizers say the airplane is the last remaining L-10E, among only 14 that were ever built.

In conjunction with the creation of a new Amelia Earhart Museum, the organization also seeks to raise funds to produce and transport the approved Kansas statue of Amelia Earhart to the United States Capitol to make her new home with Dwight D Eisenhower in National Statuary Hall, replacing the current Kansas statue of John James Ingalls.
