A St. Joseph man pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of assault of a law officer filed six years ago.

According to online court records, Christopher Punzo was scheduled for trial Tuesday, but entered the guilty plea before Judge Patrick Robb. It was the day after his 48th birthday.

In March of 2010, officers trying to arrest Punzo discovered him barricaded in a bedroom at a house at 2606 Olive Street. A volley of gunfire left Punzo injured.

A police sergeant was uninjured but officials said a bullet hit his service weapon and holster.

Judge Robb ruled that Punzo is a prior and persistent offender, which means sentencing may be enhanced under state law.

Sentencing is scheduled November 28.
