Menke’s two goals leads Western soccer past Northwest Missouri State

mwsuST. JOSEPH – Cassidy Menke set the Missouri Western soccer record for goals in a season, then padded her game-winning goals in a season record with both Griffon goals in a 2-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State on Friday night.

The sophomore’s record breaking eighth goal of the season came in the 19th minute and tied the game at one. Her sixth game winning goal of the season came in the 85th minute with an assist by Maddy Cowell.

The win gave Missouri Western a season sweep of Northwest Missouri State for the first time in program history. It also likely clinched a spot in the MIAA Tournament for the Griffons. The victory combined with a Northeastern State loss moved Missouri Western in to fourth place in the MIAA standings.

Missouri Western dominated the second half, out-shooting Northwest Missouri State 12-1 and 22-10 in the game. The Griffons had an 11-4 advantage on shots on goal and had eight corner kicks to none for Northwest Missouri State.

Bailey Dervin, Cassidy Chappell and Taylor Gant were recognized before the game as part of Senior Night festivities.

The Griffons close the regular season this Sunday when they travel to No. 4 Central Missouri.
