Scores of veterans and supporters turned out Wednesday afternoon for a Veterans Day parade in downtown St. Joseph.
We spoke with David Farrow, the Sr. Vice Commander as well as the Post Service Officer for VFW Post 1668 in St. Joseph. The post held a celebration after the parade, featuring sandwiches, cookies, cake, punch and comaraderie. Farrow agreed that while recent attendance at Veterans Day parades has dwindled, it appears to be picking back up again.
“First of all you’ve got a job, or your kids are going to school, you know that just takes up their time, and they’ve got to deal with that,” Farrow said. “A parade is a nice thing to go to if you’ve got time, and that’s it.”
“We’ve just filled up our days with so much to do that it’s hard to find time to go to things that are abnormal to your normal daily routine,” he said.
Post Commander Maurice Hughs has seen a lot of parades. The World War Two veteran is 93 years old. Hughs said Wednesday’s turnout was the best he’s seen since the 1970s.
