St. Joseph Police and Fire to take part in wheelchair basketball

wheelchair-bball1Officials with the St. Joseph Police Department and Fire Department will take part in a friendly game of wheelchair basketball to try to raise funds for adaptive sports.

Games will take place, Friday April 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Lafayette High School.  Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Proceeds raised will benefit Midwest Adaptive Sports.  MAS is a therapeutic recreational and competitive ski program for individuals with disabilities.

Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department said officials from the police department, including himself and officials with the Fire Department practiced Thursday night in an effort to learn how to play the game from a wheelchair.

“It’s very demanding physically,” Wilson said. “It’s difficult but it was sure a lot of fun.”

The first game will be MAS vs. St. Joseph Police and Fire.  The second game will be MAS vs. St. Joseph All City Basketball Players.  The public is invited to come help support the cause.

“We’d sure appreciate a lot of people coming out,” Wilson said. “There will be some world-class athletes there.  We practiced last night and these athletes that are coming out to play are really good.”

The MAS team includes two Paralympic Gold medal winners from the USA Paralympic Wheelchair Team and other wheelchair basketball players.

All money raised will go to fund the sports and recreational fees for Midwest Adaptive Sports.  For more information on MAS visit midwestadaptivesports.org or call Stan Weston at (816) 390-7455.
