Passenger injured in plane crash near Johnson County Airport

An airplane with four people on board had engine trouble shortly after takeoff from the Johnson County Airport.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the pilot found a safe place to land about two miles away. One person on board was injured.

The KHP incident report indicates the Mooney M20E single-propeller aircraft took off from the Johnson County Executive Airport, climbed to 1,000 feet, but then experienced engine failure. The plane landed at 19085 West 175th Street shortly after 6:30 p.m.

The report says the aircraft was en route to Manhattan, Kansas. The pilot was identified as Larry Simpson, 71, of Stuart, Florida. Also on board were Sunantha Simpson, 59, Jill Simpson, 62, and Richard Simpson, 67, according to the crash report. All are from Stuart, Fla.

Richard Simpson was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
