Red Cross to celebrate 100 years of service in northwest Missouri

red crossThe Red Cross of Northwest Missouri is celebrating 100 years of service in northwest Missouri with a gala event later this month.

The deadline to purchase tickets to the May 18th dinner at Missouri Western State University in the Faulkerson Center is next week. Red Cross Ex. Director Angie Springs said David Sanderson, who was one of the passengers on US Airways Flight 1549, which landed in the Hudson in 2009 will be the featured speaker.

“Sanderson was the last passenger off the plane and was largely responsible for making sure many others made it out safely,” Springs said. “He will share his lessons of that day and explain how leadership, resourcefulness and managing the mind in a crisis can allow anyone to step up and overcome his or her own, ‘personal plane crash.'”

Springs said the incident was portrayed in a 2016 movie “Sully,” in which Tom Hanks portrayed Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who became a hero after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson in order to save the flight’s passengers and crew.

Tickets for the event, which include dinner and the program with Sanderson, are $50 each and can be purchased by calling 816.232.8439 or by registering online at www.redcross.org/NWMO-100Years100Heroes. Deadline for purchasing tickets is May 10.
