James Russell Ballard, Sr.

James R. Ballard Sr. 81, Kansas CIty, MO, formerly of DeKalb, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at a North Kansas City, MO hospital. He was born February 25, 1936 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Mary and Everett Ballard. He graduated from DeKalb High School in 1954. James was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a mechanic for KW Dart in Kansas City for 23 years. In his younger years he worked at the Ballard Garage in DeKalb. He enjoyed going to the horse races, watching baseball, Jerry Springer, The Price Is Right, and Maury Povich. He was a Christian. James was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Sandra Grable. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shirley Ann Ballard, his children, Rodney (Juanita) Ballard of Kansas City, MO, Randy Ballard of Kansas City, MO, Joey Ballard, Kansas City, MO, Shelly (Larry) Stiver of Quapaw, OK, Marty Ballard of Kansas City, MO, and James Ballard, Jr. of Kansas City, MO, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and a sister, Rozann Downing of DeKalb, MO, Robert Ballard,

Marjorie M. Wells, 90, formerly of Atchison, KS died on Friday, May 18, 2017 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, KS.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 23rd from 1:00 pm until time of service at the funeral home. Marjorie was born on September 1, 1926 in White Cloud, Kansas the daughter of Charles B. and Jennie B. (Thomas) Cash. She attended Atchison Public Schools and had worked for years as a stock clerk for the former F.W. Woolworth’s Store and S.S. Kresge’s, Atchison. Mrs. Wells’s joy in life was being a wife and mother. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, was an active member of the Priscilla Guild at Trinity, and attended Morning Break, ladies Bible Study Group at church. She had also helped by calling families to help with funeral dinners and enjoyed sports and “John Wayne “movies. Marjorie was known by many as a wonderful cook and a fantastic dessert maker.
She was married to Lohman C. “Bill” Wells, on April 28, 1945 in Leavenworth, KS. He preceded her in death in July, 1990. Survivors include a son, Terry C. and daughter-in-law Joan Wells, Lawrence, KS, and nephew Dan Wells, nieces Pamela Gholson, Georgena King, and Candace Tellez. Her parents, husband, a brother, George J. Cash, and sister, Wilma Grace Wells also preceded her in death.
Darell Lee
1957-2017
Darell Lee, 59, Peabody, Kansas passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017.
He was born July 2, 1957 in Kansas City Missouri.
He was a graduate of Carson High School, Carson, California.
Mr. Lee was in an auto accident in his younger years, but still managed to do a lot. He volunteered at Access TV in Salina, Kansas at which he produced, directed and edited. He was a member of OCCK and Community Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Eugene Lee.
Survivors include his mother, Catherine Hattie(Ferrier) Lee; brothers, David Lee (Nancy) and Donald Lee (Julia); and three nieces and one nephew.

Gary Mac McDonald
1943-2017
Gary Mac McDonald, 73, Agency, Missouri, went home to his heavenly Father on May 16, 2017.
He was born to Raymond and Marcella McDonald in Kearny, Nebraska on June 11, 1943.
Gary worked construction his entire life and retired from the Operating Engineers Local Union 101 in St. Joseph. From there he opened a bait and tackle store. He purchased the Atomic Bait and enjoyed making bait and experimenting with new recipes. Gary loved to talk to other fisherman and listen to their “fish” stories. Growing up he loved horses, fishing and hunting and on the weekends you could usually find him at the lake lot with his line in the water. He loved to tell stories of his own about when he was growing up, even the ones that got him into trouble. Gary was a true family man and when they say that anyone can be a father, it takes someone special to be a daddy. He was definitely our daddy. May you dance in the heavens and rejoice in his love. God bless you, husband, daddy, and papa. We will miss you, but one day will see you again.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joseph; sister, Marlene; and granddaughter, Jacquelyn Furbee.
Survivors include his wife Ruth (Saxton) McDonald of 53 years; daughters, Lori McClain, Stacy Furbee (Ed); son, Allan McDonald; grandsons, Andrew Furbee, Christopher, Kaleb and Skylar McDonald; several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Atchison, KS with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as Celebrant and Father Norbert Schappler, OSB, as concelebrant. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. Joe was born on May 1, 1925 in Atchison KS, the son of Joseph J. Sr., and Mary M. (Ruhlman) Smith. He attended St. Benedict grade school. Joseph was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #723 of Atchison. He enjoyed his family, golfing and gardening.
Joseph married Marcella Hawk on August 10, 1968 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Joseph E. and Jo Beighley-Smith, Independence, MO, a daughter Kristina and Ken Selby, Grandview, MO, a sister Margaret “Marge” McGinnis, Atchison, KS, four grandchildren, Ian Selby, Adam, Nicholas, Andrew Beighley and lots of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Paul and Robert Smith and two sisters Loretto Smith, Justina Catherine “Kate” Smith.
Patricia Lockwood Snowden (Kinney)
1923-2017
Patricia Lockwood Snowden, Kansas University lost one of it’s biggest arm chair basketball fans on May 17, 2017.
Through the years Pat loved cheering on her team and didn’t hesitate to write to the current coach if she saw something that didn’t meet with her approval. Another one of her interests was the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, where she served as president for many years. She was a member of the Auxiliary for over 56 years. At 93 Pat was still driving to the thrift store on Monday’s to help out in the mornings. Pat was born in Atchison on August 22, 1923 and early on moved with her parents to Kansas City. She went to Kansas University, was a Pi Beta Phi and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her interest in art continued through the years and she was on the Kansas Art Commission for four years. She was a member of the Governors Council of the Arts for two years. Pat attended Sister Helen’s and Dennis McCarthy’s art classes at Benedictine College in her senior.
March 5, 1945 was the day that Pennell Snowden and Patricia Lockwood were married at the Episcopal Church in Atchison. They celebrated their marriage for 61 years, Pen passed away in 2006. Pat continued to live in the home they built together, in 1951. This was the family gathering place for her four children and their spouses, her nine grand children and her 16 great grand children. There will be a Celebration of Life for relatives and close friends at 2:30 on June 4 at the home.
