A 36-year-old man is facing a felony after authorities allegedly seized data storage devices from his St. Joseph home containing child pornography.

Michael Shalz is charged in Buchanan County with a first-degree class-D felony of possession of child pornography.

According to court documents, on Thursday around 2 p.m. detectives with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department searched Shalz’s apartment on Faraon Street and located several data storage or processing devices.

“I performed a preliminary forensic examination and located several images and at least 1 (one) video identified as child pornography,” said Det. Lonnie Bishop with the sheriff’s department. “Mr. Shalz stated he has been exchanging pornographic images including child pornography over the internet for 3 years, showing Mrs. Shalz has a propensity to exploit children.”

Shalz is being held in the Buchanan County Jail on $10,000 cash bail. He’s due in court Tuesday for an arraignment.
