Suspect in custody after standoff

(Update 5:38 pm) A suspect was taken into custody Monday evening after allegedly stealing a truck Friday night and fleeing from police and relatives of the owner in three different incidents.

Officers with automatic weapons and bullhorns surrounded a house at 1509 S. 11th Street at about 3:30 pm Monday and urged the occupants to come outside.

Commander Eric Protzman said the suspect was taken into custody after a nearly two-hour standoff.

Luther Smith of St. Joseph said his pickup was stolen from his workplace Friday night. Smith said his employer, Ring Container Technologies, has surveillance video showing the theft.

Luther’s sister Ida Springs said she spotted the truck Sunday night, and tried to follow it, but lost it when the driver noticed them following.

Smith’s stepson spotted the vehicle this afternoon at about 2:45 p.m. The stepson followed the vehicle to a repair shop near 18th and Howard. But the suspect was able to flee from police down a nearby alley. That prompted the police pursuit through town, which ended near 11th and Monterrey.

The truck appeared to have crashed into a fence. Police believe the driver fled to a house at 1509 S. 11th Street. Authorities blocked off the neighborhood streets and tried to talk the suspect into coming outside.

Protzman said one man has been taken into custody.
