(Update) – The St. Joseph Police Department is investigating an armed robbery on Memorial Highway which possibly involved a vehicle stolen earlier this month at gun point.
Officers responded to the Hawkins 66 located at 6401 Memorial Highway around 8:16 p.m. Sunday in reference to a robbery. Capt. Jeff Wilson said witnesses reported that a white man armed with a handgun wearing a purple colored bandanna and glasses entered the store and went behind the counter.
“The suspect attempted to open the cash register but was unable,” Wilson said. “The suspect fled out of the store after taking some cigarettes.”
The suspect was reported to have left the scene in a silver Taurus that was occupied by another suspect described as a white man with a bandanna over his face.
The vehicle used in the robbery matches the description of a vehicle that was allegedly stolen at gunpoint July 21 from 1525 St. Joseph Avenue. Wilson said during that incident, a 54-year-old St. Joseph man reported he was approached by a white female who pointed a gun at him and told him to get out of the car. She was last seen driving north on 4th St. Officers were unable to locate the vehicle at that time. Wilson said that vehicle was recovered on fire Sunday by the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office at 10500 SE 32nd Rd.
No arrests have been made as of Monday morning. Wilson said the case is still under investigation.
Authorities are also investigating an armed robbery which took place Friday at the Cenex located at 1029 Garfield. Capt. Jeff Wilson said witnesses described that suspect as a white man wearing a black hoodie with a blue bandanna over his face and prescription looking glasses. The man allegedly entered the store and pointed a handgun at the cashier. The suspect made off with a substantial amount of cash and left the store on foot. No injuries were reported. Wilson said it’s unknown at this time if the cases are connected.
As we previously reported, on Friday, officers also responded to K-2 Smokes and Gifts located at 1602 St. Joseph Avenue in reference to an armed robbery. The suspect was described as possibly, a white man, 5’6″ to 5’8″ slender build, wearing a mask. He left the scene on foot.
Anyone with information into any of the incidents is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 238-TIPS.
