Mildred “Marie” Robinson
1914-2017
HIAWATHA Mildred “Marie” Robinson, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017, at Overland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.
Mildred Marie Candis Favors-Robinson was born to Thomas “Pete” and Edname Whitehall-Favors April 17, 1914 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Marie which she was called by family and friends grew up in a small close knit, loving community in Elwood, Kansas where she attended Elwood Elementary School and graduated from Elwood High School. Marie joined the First Baptist Church of Elwood where she was member for many years.
On August 19, 1939, she was united in marriage to Walter B. Robinson, known by family and friends as “Walt” and moved to Hiawatha. To this union they were blessed with two children, Walter Favors and Florence Edna Marie. God blessed Marie and Walt with over 47 years of wedding bliss till his sudden death in December 1986.
When World War II broke out and Walt joined the U.S. Army, Marie moved to Omaha, NE where she attended and graduated from Althouse Beauty School and became a licensed cosmetologist. To help in providing a comfortable living for her family, Marie worked as a cook at the Hiawatha Grade School for many years as well as doing hair in her home for people throughout the community. She also worked as a caregiver outside the home. Marie joined the Second Baptist Church of Hiawatha in September of 1948 where she remained an active member until her health began to fail. She was also an active member of Eastern Star Oziel Chapter #30.
She leaves to mourn her two loving children, Walter Favors (Thelma Fuqua) Robinson of Oakland, CA and Florence (Michael) Grayson of Kansas City, KS, a sister Peggy Smith of Brookfield, MO. Two grandchildren, Joy (Stephen) Robinson-Melendez of Jackson, NJ and Robert “RD” Adamson, Jr. of Lee’s Summit, MO and one great grandchild Robert D. “Treꞌ” Adamson III of Lee’s Summit, MO and a very special sister-in-love in with whom she shared the same birthday, April 17th, Florence Combs of Hiawatha, KS as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Preceding her in death are three sisters: Alice “Dutch” Burns, Ruth Roseby, Georgianna “Sis” Chambers and three brothers: Thomas “TW”, Prentice “PJ”, and Virgil Favors.
A Celebration of Marie’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, August 19, at Second Baptist Church, 308 S 9th St, Hiawatha. Burial will follow at the Hiawatha Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, after 12 noon Friday, where the family will visit from 6 until 8 that evening.

George Fredrick “Gerry” Elliott
1942-2017
HIAWATHA. KS George Fredrick “Gerry” Elliott, 75, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.
Gerry, how he was known to family and friends, was born May 1, 1942, at Hiawatha, one of two children of Fred and Lyle Hegenderfer Martin and had lived in Hiawatha nearly all of his life. He grew up in Hiawatha where he attended schools, graduating Hiawatha High School with the class of 1960. Gerry attended and earned a BSE degree from Emporia State Teachers College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal, and served with the 9th Infantry Division, discharged at the rank of Specialist E5. He finished his military service with the Kansas Army National Guard in 1970. After returning from Vietnam, he secured a teaching position in Bonner Springs. He spent 45 years working as an electrician before retiring a couple years ago. Gerry enjoyed doing electrical work with his grandfather F.H. Hegenderfer. Among the many things they built were the magazine racks for Morrill Free Public Library, Hiawatha.
Gerry was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, including hunting and fishing.
He married Hallie Pride, October 3, 1998, at Bonner Springs, KS. She survives of the home.
Also surviving are his children Marcy Elliott of Hiawatha, her daughter Brittany Johnson, granddaughter Arya Johnson; Misty (Elliott) Stewart of Florida; step-sons Donald Wooddell and Franklin Wooddell, both of Hiawatha; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother in law Diane and Jim Eichelberger.
A Celebration of Gerry’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 23, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Wolf River Cemetery #3, near Everest.
The family will meet with friends one hour prior to service Wednesday.

Michael P. Townsend, Jr.
1970-2017
Michael P. Townsend, Jr., 46, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 at his home.
He was born September 23, 1973 in Munich, Germany to Michael, Sr. and Carol (Mitchell) Townsend.
Michael was a chemical engineer at Biozyme.
He enjoyed playing the guitar, dirt bikes and spending time with his family and friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Michael P. Townsend, Sr.; grandparents, Ester and Dan Mitchell; uncle, Daniel Mitchell, Jr. Survivors include son, Sebastian Townsend, mother, Carol Townsend; sister, Chastity Townsend; nephew, Kaliff Kirkendoll; uncles, Jack, Pat and Floyd Townsend; aunt, Romona Kates; his beloved pets, Loki and Maxx; and numerous cousins.
The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment Memorial Park Cemetery. Laurie Ann Emery, 52, of Atchison, KS died Sat. August 12th, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Center, St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Dinah Dutta officiating. Laurie was born on Jan. 24, 1965 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Donald E. and Patricia (Portenier) Emery. She had worked as a private home health aide for many years. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening, crafts, woodworking, and making homemade jewelry. She was married to Chip Hundley in 1981 and later divorced in 1983. She then married to Danny Flores in 1984 and later divorced in 1993. She was married to Pat Wentz in 1994 and later divorced in 2007.
Survivors include a brother, Patrick Emery, Atchison, two sisters, Brenda (Todd) Fidler, Perham, MN and Donna (Fred) Thompson, Atchison, KS, and eight nieces, Amanda, Megan, Tiffany, April, Ashley, Brittany, Samantha, and one nephew, Brandon, 16 great nieces and nephews and adopted sister, Pam Griffin, Atchison, KS. Her parents, a brother, Robert Emery and Bob Domann preceded her in death.
Harold E. Elliott
1932-2017
Hiawatha, KS
Harold E. Elliott, 85, of rural Hiawatha, died Saturday evening, August 12, 2017, at Hiawatha Community Hospital. Harold was born southwest of Hiawatha February 4, 1932, the son of Herbert O. and Bernice (Loose) Elliott. Early in childhood, he moved east of Hiawatha to the farm where he lived and farmed with family, spanning four generations, for 75 years prior to living the last 5 years at the Pines South of Hiawatha.
Harold attended the Prairie Springs School and then graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1950. On December 27th, 1959, he married Norma (Stuermer) Elliott. She preceded him in death on February 8, 2011.
Harold enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard, 154th Field Artillery, after high school attaining the rank of Master Sergeant prior to his discharge.
A life-long member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Hiawatha, he served the church in many ways including several terms on the Consistory. Harold also served terms on the boards of the Brown County Coop (Ag Partners), Hiawatha Community Hospital, Brown County Soil Conservation District, and he was past-president of Prairie Springs Farms, Inc. and Elliott Farms, Inc. He was a past member of the Hiawatha Lions Club.
Survivors include: a son, Howard and Lori Elliott, a daughter, Jean Ann and Ray Brintnall of Hiawatha, five grandchildren: Mathew (Amy) Elliott, Teresa (Levi) Manche, Sara Elliott, Jay (Jessica) Brintnall, and Jessie Brintnall; four great- grandchildren: Caleb, Eric, Annie Manche, Clara Elliott; and a sister, Charlene (James) Hogan.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, after 12 noon Tuesday. The family will meet with friends that evening from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
A Celebration of Harold’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, at Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha. Pastor Shane Spangler will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Kias Bernard
1975-2017
In Loving Memory of Kias Bernard
Kias Bernard was born on the 18th day of December, 1975 in the State of Chuuk, Micronesia on the Island of Udot.
He graduated from Chuuk High School in 1994. He later went to Guam U.S.A. where he met and married his wife, Sherra Karsom.
In 2005 they moved to Saint Joseph, Missouri where he worked at Triumph Foods (a pork processing plant).
He worked his way up, was promoted, helped new hires to master the skills on how to cut and be productive. He left behind his five daughter, Jennessa Lucas, Stereen Bernard, Sikera Wia, Sikereen Kias, and Sheveen Kias, and his son, Rickson Wia.
He was loved by his family and friends.
Charla Molinare Boteler
1931-2017
Charla Molinare Boteler, 85 of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, CT. passed away on July 29, 2017 around 9:30 p.m. after a twenty year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was blessed to live out her life in her own home. Charla was born November 7, 1931 in Omaha Nebraska to William and Edna (Tolander) Molinare.
Her family settled in Houston Texas. She went to Stephens College in Columbia Missouri to earn degree in fashion design and then a degree in education from University of Missouri.
In 1954, Charla married William Connett Boteler who preceded her death in 1998. The couple moved to Kansas City and raised a family of two children; daughter, Alison Molinare Boteler (Connecticut) and William Connett Boteler Jr. (Maryland). The family moved in 1975 to reside in Northport NY. From 1981 to 2017, her home has been in Connecticut where her daughter was her caregiver along with fiancé James Comstock.
Charla was a member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fairfield CT. Charla was a creative and delightful character throughout her life. In mid-stage Alzheimer’s, she won a distinctive award for her work “Art for Art in Alzheimer’s” from The Housatonic Museum of art in 2010. That year she also exhibited in City Lights Gallery of Bridgeport and Westport Art Center. In addition to her surviving children, Charla has two nephews: Bernard Molinare of New Bern North Carolina and Roderick Molinare, Jr. who resides in the Cotswolds of England.
Joy Raylene Collins
1948-2017
Joy Raylene Collins 69, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital in Saint Joseph, MO surrounded by her family. She was born May 15, 1948 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Dorothy and Bobby Stegall. She graduated from Benton High School in 1966 and Platte College. She worked at Stetson Hat for 16 years, and she was an In-Home Care Giver. She enjoyed riding and showing horses, crocheting, her Shetland sheep show dogs, crafts, electronics, and taking pictures. Joy was preceded in death by her father, and 2 brothers, Kelly Stegall and Hallard Heald. Survivors include: daughter, Jennie Raylene (Chad) Russell of Faucett, MO, son, Bobby Hendrix of SD, her mother, Dorothy Stegall, of the home, 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, brother, Stacy Stegall of NM, sister, Dixie Stegall Akers of the home, and niece, Ricci Farthing of St. Joseph, MO.
