Arthena Lucille Schildtknecht
1921-2017

Arthena Lucille Schildtknecht, entered Heavens gates with peace, in her sleep, on August 13, 2017. She was at Frenvalley Care Center in Owensville, MO.
She was 96 years old, born March 16, 1921 in Thompson, Iowa. She formerly lived in St. Joseph.
Mama had an unwavering faith in God. She was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church for many years and was a faithful and loving Christian since her baptism in the river as a young girl.
Her mother, Hazel (Cawood) Hayes and father, Lynde Foster Hayes moved to Andrew County outside of Guilford, MO. where she attended a one room country school, “Hickory Creek”. She walked or rode a horse to get there because it was so far. While she attended High School in Bolckow she boarded with the Dodd’s family. She graduated from Bolckow High School in 1939, and often told us she only had two dresses and had to wash them out at night.
She was united in marriage to Lawrence Ray Schildtknecht, from Rosendale on May 22, 1939. They were married for 56 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brother, Lynde Jr. Hayes and daughter, Brenda Alice Schildtknecht.
She is survived by her children, Sharon “Dee” Graham, Renita G. Hull (Charles), Kathy E. Shane, and Larry L. Schildtknecht (Lisa, who was like another daughter); 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; sister, Darlene Campbell, and many dear friends she considered her extended family.
Her spirit is carried on by all of us she loved so much. She was truly the Matriarch of our family. She was a wonderful and beautiful woman that was loved so much, is missed and will always be cherished.
Besides “Arthena” she was called “Art”, “Grandma”, “Grandma G.G.”, “Mama” and “Ma”. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, sister, daughter, loyal employee and friend.
She played a “mean” hand of pitch. She LOVED chicken gizzards and could make a great gravy from anything. I can still remember the aroma of her homemade bread when we came home from school. Her skin was beautiful, and I can still smell that Ponds Cold Cream. She was especially identified by her laugh, which could be heard across the room, (or sometimes the next county). Some of her female offspring have also inherited that trait.
Mama was always happy, smiling, and often singing.
Above all, she read and studied her Bible. She wrote prayers, cards and letters to everyone about everything. You may read this and recall a correspondence from her that touched your heart, cheered you, tickled your funny bone, brightened your day, gave you hope and made you know you were loved.
Mama leaves a void in us, but we are happy for her. She is reunited with her “Lil Abner (Daddy) who has been waiting for his “Daisy Mae”.
The family would very much like to thank the caring staff of both, Meadowview Care Center, St. Joseph, MO and Frenvalley Care Center, Owensville, MO.
Farewell Services 10:00 A.M. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Walnut Grove Cemetery, Andrew County, MO. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Flowers are appreciated and for those wishing to make a contribution, the family requests they be made to Meadowview Care Center, 101 Farwest Dr. St. Joseph, MO 64506 or Walnut Grove Cemetery c/o Jim Gabrieth 27584 390th St. Barnard, MO 64423-8115.
