Warren Harold “Bud” Pike
1924-2017

Warren “Bud” Harold Pike, 93, formerly of Lancaster, KS died on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 25th, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Nancy J Kollhoff officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison KS. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 25th, 2017 at the funeral home. Bud was born on Sept. 20, 1924 in Atchison KS the last of five children of Charles N. and Anna R. (Volk) Pike. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1942 and went into farming. While still farming, he went to work for Pillsbury Mills for 31 years. He was forced to retire from both in 1981 due to a lung disease he had gotten through working at the mill. But his love for farming never died and when his health allowed, he continued to work seasonally for the Buttron Family for several years. They even provided him with an air conditioned cab so he could continue to help them farm!
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, and took great pride in caring and nurturing the rose garden at the church until his health did not allow him to continue. He and his wife Shirley were two of the founding members of Atchison Hospice and were active in it for several years. He also was a driver for the Cancer Society, driving the elderly to appointments and a volunteer to visit the sick, elderly and widowed. Because of the loss of two of their children, he and his wife formed a support group called the “The Compassionate Friends” for parents who have lost children.

He enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes and cucumbers, for which they were well known for their dill pickles! In 2013, his church family provided him with an elevated garden plot so he could continue to grow his beloved tomatoes when he could no longer bend over to take care of them.

Bud was married to Merle Maxene Moulden on April 20, 1944 in Atchison KS. She preceded him in death on Jan. 19, 1951. He was later married to Shirley (Benshoof) Gorrell on Feb. 10, 1952 at the Farmington Christian Church. Shirley preceded him in death on May 23, 2013, after celebrating 62 years of marriage. Survivors include a daughter Carole (Jim) Wood, Liberty, MO, ten grandchildren: Denise (Scott) Claypole, Excelsior Springs, MO, Denny (Lisa) Dooley, Holt, MO, Dawn Teegarden, Kansas City, MO, Deni Gardner, Albany, NY, Donette Stukes, Birmingham, MO, Bryan (Leah) Pike, Crestone, CO, Steve (Fiancée Christina) Craig, Birmingham, MO, Shane (Teresa) Estes, Liberty, MO, Josephine (Jason) Field, Alberta, Canada, and Kristopher Pike, twenty-seven great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers, two sisters, a nephew, two sons, Danny Pike (Sept. 1986) and Dennis Pike (Nov 2008), a daughter, Jeannine Elsmore (Aug. 1988) and a granddaughter, Audra Wyatt (Nov. 2016) also preceded him in death.

Sharon Ruth Caton
1942-2017

Sharon Ruth Caton 75, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, November 20, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. She was born September 30, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri, daughter of the late Gale & Tolbert Payne. She graduated from Benton High School in 1960. She retired from the Clay County Health & WIC Department. She enjoyed spending time in her yard, and going to the Four Square Church. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include; daughter, Tammy Parker, (David Petty), son, Jimmy (Marsha) Parker both of St. Joseph, MO, grandson, Joshua Parker, 3 step grandchildren, and brother, Roger (Cheryl) Payne, St. Joseph, MO. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Monday with Memorial Services to begin at 2:00 pm at the Rupp Funeral Home. She will be cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the Sharon Caton Memorial Fund in care of Rupp Funeral Home.

Patricia Anne Lamar
1962-2017

Patricia Anne Lamar 55, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday November 20, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. She was born July 13, 1962 in St. Joseph, Missouri daughter of the late Nida & Norton Rollett. She graduated from DeKalb High School, and worked at several nursing homes throughout St. Joseph as a CNA. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing darts and going to the casino, and she loved her little dogs, Sadie and Sophie. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James Carl Good Lamar, daughter, Tosh Rollett, sister, Janie Pace. She is survived by daughters, Tisha Worley, and Rachel Ferguson, son, Nathaniel (Sarah) Rollett, St. Joseph, MO, grandchildren; Mike who was raised in the home, Austin, J.R., Elizabeth, Adrianna, Mercedes, Dominick, Delany, Kadance, Ceyton, Neia, and Shelby, brothers, Norton Jr., Norman, and Rory Rollett, sisters, Debbie Rollett, Karen Rollett, and Paula McCoy. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be cremated under care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Arthur N. Mildfeldt, Sr.
1940-2017

ELWOOD,KS Arthur N. Mildfeldt, Sr. 77, of Elwood, Kansas died Sunday, November 19, 2017 at his home.

Art was born on April 7, 1940 in Stockdale, Kansas to William & Margaret Mary (Harrison) Mildfeldt. He lived most of his life in Elwood, Art worked with millright and concrete construction. He was an avid gardener, loved to hunt & fish, loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Art’s hobbies were making wine, cooking, crossword puzzles and watching K-State football. He never met a stranger and always had a story for everyone. Art will be deeply missed.

He is a member of the Lighthouse Church in Fillmore, Missouri Art was preceded in death by his parents,.14 siblings.

Art married Linda Almy on Aug. 27, 1976. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his children, son; Art N. Mildfeldt, Jr.(Whitney) of Savannah, Missouri; Daughter; April Todorotski of Platte City, Missouri; Step-daughters; Stacey Ellis (Rick) of St. Joseph, Missouri; Tina Wong (Brian) of Las Vegas, Nevada; Michelle Sears (Ronald)of St. Joseph, Missouri; 3 brothers, 4 sisters and 12 grandchildren.

There will only be a visitation: Friday evening 6-8 PM at the Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena, Kansas Following the visitation Art will be cremated.

Karen Dorene McConnaughey
1942-2017

Karen Dorene McConnaughey, 75, of Atchison, KS died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am on Sat. Nov. 25th, at the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Hansen, Pastor of the Carol Baptist Church officiating. Karen was born on March 3, 1942 in Atchison KS the daughter of Frank G. and Mildred I. (Shupe) McConnaughey. She graduated from Atchison High School and received her Associate’s Degree in Business from Highland Community College. Karen worked as a bookkeeper for the former Townsend & Wall Dept. Store, St. Joseph, MO, then for American Electric, UMB Bank, all of St. Joseph, MO and for approximately 5 years for the Patsy Porter, CPA, of Atchison. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church, Atchison where she taught Sunday school for 50 years, and served on the Mission Council. Karen was a member of the POE. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, reading, playing puzzles, and playing the piano. She especially enjoyed going to her nephews ball games.

She is survived by three sisters; Nancy Donaldson, Atchison, KS , Frances (Robert) Peterson, Atchison, and Helen (Earl) Price, Lathrop, MO and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, two brothers, George F. and Byron E. McConnaughey, and one sister, Catherine McConnaughey, preceded her in death

Robert Lewis “Bob” Thompson
1928-2017

Robert Lewis “Bob” Thompson, 89, of Atchison KS died on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Friday, Nov. 24th, at the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Matt Broxterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Bob was born August 25,1928 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Jean and Bertha (Wohlgemuth)Thompson. He attended Franklin grade school and graduated from Atchison High school in 1946, he lettered in football, ran track and played church league basketball, hunted rabbits and squirrels. After high school graduation, Bob and Curtis Lash hitch hiked to Colorado for the summer. After returning to Atchison, he and several class mates joined the Army together and served two years in occupied Japan. Upon returning to Kansas, Bob attended a two-year engineering school in Kansas City and then was employed by General Motors. He met Freda B Hicks in the early 1950’s and they were married June 4, 1951. They are parents of two children Shelly Swendson of Effingham and Steve Thompson, Fort Worth, TX. Bob ran the Conoco gas station at the corner of Sixth and Kansas from 1953 to 1964. He later worked for the Heklinkamper Bottling Company in Atchison. In the late 60’s Bob purchased the Burkhart Exterminating company, he and Freda ran that as Atchison Pest Control until his retirement in 1994. Bob then trained himself as an Archeological technician and worked throughout the United States on private and government projects. Bob was a avid camper all his adult life, he built and owned several campers, and along with Freda, traveled to most of the states. Bob was extremely proud of his granddaughters, Lana, Jodi, Jenni and Katie. He survived by Freda Thompson of the home, daughter Shelly and Tom Swendson, Effingham, granddaughter Lana and Caleb Barkman, great-granddaughter Madilynn, Circleville, KS., granddaughter Jodi Swendson, Manhattan, son Steve and Cindy Thompson, Fort Worth, TX., granddaughter Jenni and Eric Neal, great-granddaughter Adelaide, Durango, CO., and Katie and Hugh Ferguson, great-grandson Little Hugh V, Denver, CO. Bob preceded in death by his parents, older brother James, Jimmy, Thompson, and Mildred Jean, Bea, Lipp. Sister Louise Ellen, Tiny, Kibler and brother Alfred, Sonny, Thompson survive in Atchison.

Albert “Al” Franklin Yowell
1939-2017

Albert “Al” Yowell 77, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital in Saint Joseph. He was born in Newburg, Mo to Everett and Bessie Yowell on December 29, 1939. He attended Rolla, MO High School, and he served in the US Army. Upon return to the states, he married Nancy Diggs. They recently celebrated 54 years of marriage.
He worked as a logger, a truck driver for Markt Trucking, & later Al was self employed as Yowell Trucking. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and mowing. He especially liked NASCAR, and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by wife, Nancy, daughter, Brenda (Roger) Baker of St. Joseph, MO, son, Todd Yowell of Hackensack, NJ, grandchildren, Dathan Pettis of St. Joseph, MO, and Cayleigh (Kyle) Kelly of Kansas City, MO, sisters, Betty and Bessie, and a brother, Charlie along with many nieces and nephews. Al was a devoted husband, and loving father and grandfather. He will be missed by many family, friends, and neighbors. Celebration of Life; 5:00-8:00 PM, Friday, December 1, 2017 at 615 Felix Street, St. Joseph, MO. He will be cremated under the care of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Carolyn Sue Hoffmann
1960-2017

Carolyn Sue Hoffmann, 57, of Bolckow, Missouri, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at her home. She was born July 22, 1960 in St. Joseph, MO. She graduated from Benton High School in 1978, and worked for a short time for Monfort Pork. However, her heart was always in health care as a CNA, Level I Med Aide. She loved taking care of the elderly and disabled. She was a faithful member of the Faith Valley Church of God. Carolyn was preceded in death by father, Lloyd Turpin, mother, Alphonsine McCarty, sisters, Brenda Hook, Sharon Christensen, and Nancy Rowland, and step son, Shaun Lee Hoffmann. Survivors include, husband, Brian Hoffmann of the home, daughter, Chyrstal Traunernicht, King City, MO, son, Jason (Erin) Trauernicht, step sons, Jason Hoffmann and Brian Hoffmann, step daughter, Kristi Hoffmann, grandchilden, Alex, Renee, Dereck, Sebastian, Zechariah, Lillianna, Donnie, and Izabella, brothers, Bill (Dawn) Turpin, Johnny (Carrie) McCarty, and Earl McCarty, twin sister, Marilyn McConnell, and sister, Carla Hamilton both of St. Joseph, MO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:30 am on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Faith Valley Church of God with Pastor Mark Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the King Hill Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Navajo Toy Ministry program through the Faith Valley Church of God.

James David “Jim” Garrett, Jr.
1954-2017

James David “Jim” Garrett, Jr., 63, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, November 23, 2017, shortly after arrival at Hiawatha Community Hospital.
Jim was born August 1, 1954 in Kansas City, KS, the eldest of three sons born to James SR., and Betty Parrish Satterfield Garrett. Jim earned his GED and went on to also receive a vocational schooling degree. Moving to the Hiawatha area in his early 20s he worked as a supervisor for the Flair Fold cabinet factory which, he eventually gave up to do car mechanics full time. He worked at WENGER TRANSMISSION for many years before opening his own garage in 1991 down at the bottom of hill behind his house until 2001 when his health would no longer allow him to do so full time.

July 1983 he married Linda Overfield and were happily married through the remainder of his life. He was blessed with, three daughters, two sons, and one grandson they raised. Stacy Mackey (Cliff)of Hiawatha, Kari Clary (Chad) of Highland, and Renee Bostic (Randy) of Hiawatha, Jeff Luoma (Julie) of Kansas City, James Garrett, III, (Heather) of Tulsa, Ok; Chazz Exon, Olathe, KS. He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, and great-grandpa of 2. Also surviving is his mother Betty Satterfield of Hiawatha; and a brother Claude “Shorty” Garrett of Tennessee.

Jim is preceded in death by his father James Garrett SR., along with his stepfather Cordell Satterfield also his younger brother Bobby Garrett and granddaughter Paige Bostic.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tuesday, where the family will gather from 7-8:30p.m.

FUNERAL SERVICES are set for Wednesday, November 29th at 11am at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home of Hiawatha with Pastor Tom Stone officiating. Interment will be held at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha with gathering to follow immediately at FAMILY LIFE CENTER BUILDING in Hiawatha

1928-2017

Rayetta May Moody 89, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017 at a local health care center. She was born November 23, 1928 in DeKalb, Missouri, daughter of the late May & Riley Steele. Rayetta was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Melvin Steele. She is survived by cousins: Rosemary Barton, Linda Wheeler, Jim Robinson, C.H. Robinson, and Junior Robinson. There is no Memorial Service or visitation scheduled at this time. She will be inurned at Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
