Mustangs hang on to win at Jefferson City 9-8

The St. Joseph Mustangs picked up a road win Sunday as they hung on to defeat the Jefferson City Renegades 9-8 at Vivion Field.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball improves to 11-6 this season and 9-5 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs blew a 5-0 and a 7-2 lead as Jeff City rallied with one run in the seventh inning and four more in the eighth to tie the game 7-7. St. Joseph answered right back with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and then held on for the one-run victory.

The Mustangs hit three home runs on the night as Mason Janvrin, Colton Eremian and Terrence Spurlin each went deep for the first time this seaosn. All three of those guys, along with Daniel Covert, drove in two runs a piece.

Nick Houzenga earned the win in relief as he allowed one run and four hits in 1.1 innings of work. Corey Cowen started and threw well as he gave up just two runs and three hits in six innings.

The Mustangs have Monday off before returning home Tuesday for a matchup with the Sedalia Bombers at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
