O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri man has been charged in the December death of his girlfriend’s 4-month-old son.

31-year-old Devon Michael Coleman, of O’Fallon, was charged Wednesday with felony abuse and neglect of a child resulting in death.
The infant, Dexter Gabel, was found unresponsive on Dec. 7 in a portable crib. A medical examiner ruled the death a homicide as result of strangling or smothering. An autopsy found the baby had injuries around his head and face.
Police say Coleman had been watching the baby and told officers the infant wouldn’t stop crying. He says he put the baby down for a nap and later returned to find he had stopped breathing.
Coleman has multiple domestic violence convictions and is currently imprisoned for felony domestic assault.
