MIAMI COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash during a high-speed chase.

Just after 10:30p.m. Friday, police attempted to stop a motorcycle for multiple traffic violations, according to a media release from the sheriff’s department. The driver identified as Gilford Lee Sherley, 54, Paola, fled at a high rate of speed and crashed into a tree near 335th Street and Old Kansas City Road.
Sherley was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff’s department.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Sherley had ten previous convictions for kidnapping, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, flee or attempted to flee and elude law enforcement, criminal damage to property and drugs.
