Northwest Missouri State soccer wins opener against William Jewell

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over William Jewell on Thursday at Bearcat Pitch.

First-year head coach Marc Gordon’s squad put up 20 shots and got goals from Madie Krueger and Maddie Holtmann in the victory.

William Jewell took a 1-0 lead in the opening period on a goal from Kayla Crowder in the 28th minute.

Northwest wasted little time in equalizing the score at 1-1 on a goal from Krueger in the 30th minute. Krueger knotted the contest with an assist from Adrie Gunn.

The Bearcats scored the game-winning goal from Holtman six minutes into the second period. Holtman fired a shot that was blocked by William Jewell’s goalie Kaylie Kappelmann, but Holtman controlled the rebound and found the back of the net.

Northwest goalie Alexa Serna Castillo made 12 saves for the Bearcats.

Northwest will be in action Sunday at 6 p.m. at Rockhurst.
