Charlie Castle
1933 – 2019

Charlie Castle, 86, of St. Joseph, died Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Living Community in St. Joseph. Charlie was born February 28, 1933 in St. Joseph, to Forest and Pansey (Walker) Castle.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy; receiving an honorable discharge.

He was a member of the IBEW for 65 years, working as an electrician for many different contractors. He then was the business manager for IBEW for six years prior to retiring.

Charlie was a member of the Savannah United Methodist Church.

He was generous with his smile and his friendship. He loved being outdoors, especially the family’s yearly trip to Minnesota. He was an avid fisherman, but truly treasured his family’s time together reuniting at South Turtle Lake. Time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him great pride and joy.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and golf, as well as coaching and watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He married Mary Lou Nold on August 12, 1955 and she survives. Also surviving are children Kirke Castle (Roxie), Kim Morgan (Jason), Kevin Castle (Dianne); grandchildren, Jason (Kelly), Jayme (Jesse), Jarod, Marnie, Max; great-grandchildren Bryson, Hadlee, Cutler, Sadie, Hanna; a sister Beverly June Schneider; other relatives, friends, and loving dog Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy, and brother Bob.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Noyes Home or to Freudenthal Hospice.

Services will be Friday, March 8, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Norman D. Goodman
1936 – 2019

Norman Goodman, 82, of Hiawatha, passed Monday, March 4, 2019, at Maple Heights Nursing Home.

He was born April 1, 1936 in Sabetha, to Lucy “May” Tyner and James Goodman. He grew up on a farm near Wetmore, and attended country school prior to graduating from Wetmore High School in 1954.

Norman married Lynda Gregory of St. Joseph, on May 16, 1970. They lived in the Fairview and Hiawatha area for 48 years. He and Lynda were devoted members of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hiawatha. He was also a member of the Lions Club; BPOE #1741 Hiawatha Elks Lodge; and Knights of Columbus Council #8505.

He farmed in Nemaha County, worked at KDOT prior to working as a welder in Wathena, and owned and operated a lawn service and a trash service in Hiawatha. Norman also worked at the Walmart in Hiawatha. Norman loved working outside, socializing with the many friends he had in the community, and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever he could.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Banwart; and brother, Merlin Goodman. Survivors include: wife, Lynda; son, Dwayne (Carol); son, Kevin; daughter, Lynette Grier (Mike); son Dennis (Rachelle); 8 grandchildren, Caden, Zachary, Kesha, Colton, Aunna, Chloe, Katie, and Neville; 2 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Verna Goodman; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Services are planned for Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Frazier, MO cemetery. On Thursday the rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m., followed by visitation from 5-7 p.m.

James Ray Birkinsha, Sr.
1938 – 2019

James Ray Birkinsha, Sr. 80, of Atchison KS died on Tuesday, March 05, 2019 at his home surround by his family.

Funeral services will be 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 9th, 2019 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Broxterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on Saturday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Ave, Atchison, KS. James was born on July 16, 1938 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Raymond E. and Bessie L. (Trisler) Birkinsha. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1956. He served in the Army National Guard. Mr. Birkinsha was a firefighter and worked for the Atchison City Fire Department for over 20 years, retiring in 1981. He also did handyman jobs around town for many people including the Hilltop, and Keimigs Capri Motel . James enjoyed fishing, going to the casinos and spending time with his family.

He was married to Iris “Helen” Portenier on Sept. 22, 1956. She preceded him in death on April 30, 2011. Survivors include three sons; Jim Birkinsha (Becky Roland), Phil (Stacy) Birkinsha, of Atchison KS and Michael (Karen) Birkinsha, St. Joseph, MO, five daughters; Lavon (Bob) Harmon, Michelle (Bob) Henry, Rhoda (Joe) Butner, all of Atchison, KS, Teresa (Jim) Leydon, LaPlata, MD, Julie (Tracey) Irwin, Hiawatha, KS, twenty two grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. His parents, wife Iris, two brothers; Jack & Jerry Birkinsha, three grandchildren and two son in-law’s Richard Honeywell and Jerry Long preceded him in death.

 

Vernon K. “Keith” May
1929 – 2019

Vernon ‘Keith’ May, 89, Winchester, KS passed away Monday evening, March 4, 2019 at Country Care Nursing Home in Easton, KS.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS with Rev. Tom Nehring, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday. The family request memorial contributions are made to the wishes of the donor’s choice. Keith was born on September 26, 1929 in Menoken, KS, the son of Clyde and Winifred (Strobel) May. Keith worked as a prison guard for the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the US Penitentiary in Leavenworth, KS for over 20 years. After retiring from the prison, Keith worked at a fertilizer plant in Lawrence, KS, prior to the plant closing and he also did various farm work in the Winchester area. Keith was a former member of the Victory Baptist Church in Tonganoxie, KS and the American Angus Association.

Keith was married to Virginia L. Mikesell. She preceded Keith in death. Keith is also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randal May in 1967; and two sisters, Marilyn Clark and Eleanor Shughart.

Keith is survived by a son, Michael May, Winchester; daughter, Dr. Leslie May (Dr. Joseph Pelati), Houston, TX; and a brother, Robert May, Stanley, KS.
