Joseph J. Rivera
1940 – 2019
Joseph J. Rivera, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away March 28, 2019, at his home.
He was born November 5, 1940, in St. Joseph.
Joe married Kathleen Haffey on May 22, 1974. She survives of the home. He was a drywall contractor for many years. Joe was an avid fisherman and hunter with his best friend, Larry Muff, and loved his Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He also loved his faithful basset hound companions. Joe was proud to have coached softball for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Josephine (Garcia) Rivera, and siblings, Anthony, Lazaro, Paul P., Aldolpho, John J., Rosemary, Frank J., and Guadalupe Rivera.
Survivors also include his wife, Kathy; children, Julie Rivera Rush (Tom), Jennifer Hamm (Kevin), Joseph Rivera, Tim Rivera, Jim Rivera, Angela Williams (Danny), and Aleisha Rivera; siblings, Lollie Rivera, Carmen Rivera Palma (Pete), Helen Rivera Thornton, and Pat M. Rivera (Jackie); ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, St. Patrick Catholic Church. The family will gather with friends 12:00 Noon to 12:30 P.M. Tuesday with Parish Rosary to follow, St. Patrick Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Special Olympics, or the donor’s choice. Captain Timothy Travis Owens
1967 – 2019
Captain Timothy Travis Owens, 51, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully after a long, hard battle with cancer, Thursday, March 28, 2019, with his sweet wife and caretaker, Rachel, and his family by his side.
He was born September 12, 1967 in St. Joseph, MO. Travis married the love of his life, Rachel McGinness on September 26, 1997. He was a Class of 1985 Benton graduate. After graduation, he served 4 years active duty in the U.S. Army and 11 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. Captain Owens retired from the St. Joseph Fire Department after 25 years of dedicated service. During his service he was a member of the SJFD Honor Guard and a recipient of the SJFD Lifesaving Award. He also served as the I.A.F.F. Local 77 President for several years. Travis was also an EMT and worked on the ambulance for 10 years. Travis was a member of The Keys Christian Fellowship Church. He and his daughter, Baylor were baptized together on December 20, 2015. He loved spending time with his family, coaching and watching sports.
Travis was preceded in death by his father, Roger Owens.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Rachel Owens; daughters, Keely Bruckshaw (Taylor), Baylor Owens; son, Jacob McCollum (Mercedes Estes); granddaughter, Addisynn; his mother, Helen (Newberry) Nelson; sister, Tammy Kline (Gregg); brother, Roger “Gary” Owens (Brenda), nieces, nephews, and numerous extended family and friends.
Celebration of Life 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, Grace Evangelical Church. The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, Grace Evangelical Church. The family suggests memorial gifts to Mosaic Life Care Cancer Center.
David S. Angle, Brig. Gen. (Ret)
1948 – 2019
David Stephen Angle passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at the age of 71.
David, the son of Robert and Phyllis Keck Angle was born March 3rd, 1948 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He graduated Benton High School in St. Joseph in 1966. He married Kathy McGlothlin, who also attended Benton, on April 6, 1968. Their time as newlyweds was short lived as David had joined the United States Air Force and was deployed overseas on his first active duty assignment. After two years of overseas deployment David was assigned to Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma to complete the two remaining years of his active duty service. After discharge, he returned to St. Joseph and began working for the United States Post Office.
In 1974 David accepted a full-time position with the Missouri Air National Guard. He served in the Guard the remainder of his career. He served in the Missouri Air National Guard from 1974 to 1984 where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He transferred to the Oklahoma National Guard in 1984, serving in the 138th Fighter Wing in Tulsa, OK and the 137th Airlift Wing in Oklahoma City, OK. David earned a number of major awards and decorations in his career, obtaining the rank of Brigadier General November, 2005. David had the unique distinction of being assigned as a Vice Wing Commander at both the 138th Fighter Wing and 137th Airlift Wing before being assigned as Assistant Adjutant General, Joint Force Headquarters, Oklahoma Military Department, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. David prided himself in the way he served his fellow servicemen. David retired from the Guard November, 2007.
David loved spending time boating and fishing with his family and friends. He eventually purchased a lake property in Grove, OK where he and Kathy built their first lake house in 1990. David and Kathy enjoyed traveling. They frequented Branson, MO, Arizona and Colorado. Family was always a huge part of his focus and he loved spending time with his family. Nothing brought him more joy than time with his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Phyllis Angle.
Survivors include his wife Kathy of the Home; daughter, Stephanie Angle-Walls and husband Herb of Parkville, Missouri; son, Stephen Angle and Lori Hampton of Claremore; grandchildren, William David Walls, and Paige Angle; brother, Terry Angle and wife Evangeline along with numerous extended family and military family.
