Mustangs’ season ends in Wichita with 8-5 loss to Valley Center

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their 2014 season come to an end Monday in the consolation bracket of the NBC World Series in Wichita as they lost to Valley Center (KS) 8-5.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team finishes with a 41-18 record, along with their third MINK League title in four years and their fourth trip to the NBC in six seasons.

On Monday the Mustangs were their own worst enemy as they commmitted five errors and the pitching staff walked nine batters.

Valley Center only had four hits in the game, but they stole five bases and took advantage of the St. Joseph mistakes to scored four unearned runs.

The Mustangs fell behind 5-4 after six innings, but used a two-out rally in the eighth inning to tie they game when Joe Koerper drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game.

The Diamond Dawgs answered right back though as they scored three runs on no hits in the bottom of the eighth thanks in part to two St. Joe errors and three walks by Austin Aspregren.

The Mustangs hit the ball well as they out-hit Valley Center 14-4, but they stranded 13 men on base.  Koerper, D’Marco Poindexter, Josh Cassidy and Brandon Huske had two hits each, while Koerper scored two runs and Huske had two RBI.

Dixon Marble made the start for St. Joe as he allowed four runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.  He struck out three, but walked four.

Aspegren suffered the loss in relief as he walked four in two innings.  He allowed three runs despite not allowing a hit.
