The new YMCA at the St. Joseph Community Campus was closed early Tuesday morning after issues with the sprinkler system.

“The steam room overheated when the doors were opened the heat from the steam caused one sprinkler to go off,” said Mark Cartledge, YMCA CEO.

Staff found the sprinkler issue prior to opening the facility for use at around 4:50 a.m.

Cartledge said water damaged was caused on the carpet and locker rooms, however the cost of the damages is minimal.

“We’re just cleaning up a little water at this point and getting things cleaned,” said Cartledge. “We expect to be open this afternoon.”

He said that the steam room generator operators were already out looking at adjusting the temperature to fix the situation in the future.

The “Y” is expected to reopen at 3 p.m.

Cartledge apologized for any inconvenience the closing had for members.
