A vehicle in Liberty became trapped in a sinkhole after it struck a fire hydrant. Liberty North High School senior Austin Oard says he was on his way to a job interview Wednesday when he swerved to avoid an oncoming car and crashed into a fire hydrant.
That ruptured a water main and released about 7,000 gallons of water. Water eroded the roadway at the crossing of South Wales and South Withers Streets near the Liberty Community Center.
Homes in the area were without water and power for a short period of time.
Police say the other driver may be ticketed for causing the crash.
Oard says that he and his sister managed to escape their car before the sinkhole opened up and swallowed his car. There were no injuries, except perhaps to Mr Oard’s job prospects. But, there’s plenty of video evidence to support what would ordinarily be considered a flimsy excuse for missing a job interview.
