Richardson County Commissioners signed a Declaration of Disaster on Tuesday following heavy rains that flooded a large area of southeastern Nebraska. Emergency Management officials say road damages are a big concern, as fast-moving water washed out culverts and roads.
Damage has been estimated at over one million dollars.
The county and its towns, villages and districts are hoping for financial assistance from the Nebraska Governor’s Emergency Fund. That could also lead to federal disaster relief.
Storms dumped more than four inches of rain on Richardson County last Wednesday through Friday. Parts of several other southeast Nebraska counties and towns — including DeWitt, Crete and Fairbury — were also flooded.
Commissioners say if the county gets the funding, most of it would be used to cover losses and rebuild damaged infrastructure. The remaining aid will go toward bolstering infrastructure to prevent additional losses during the next heavy rainstorm.
