All eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are closed in eastern Topeka after a fatality accident that involved a hazardous material spill.
The Kansas Department of Transportation says the interstate was closed about 6 a.m. Tuesday from 4th Street to the California Avenue interchange in east Topeka.
The lanes are expected to remain closed until at least noon.
The closed ramps include westbound I-70 on-ramps from California Avenue and Adams Interchange, and eastbound I-70 on ramps from 4th, 8th and 10th Streets.
The transportation department says oversized semi-truck trailers must use I-470 loop through south Topeka to access the interstate.
At least one person is dead.
KDOT officials say the tanker truck was hauling an oil based substance that is considered to be hazardous. The truck hit the highway median, knocked a huge overhead sign straight to ground, tipped over and spilled its load.
