Missouri and Kansas officials investigate if abortion facilities are selling tissue from aborted fetuses

Planned Parenthood logo(AP) UNDATED — Officials in Missouri and Kansas are investigating abortion facilities to see if they are selling tissue and organs from aborted fetuses.

Attorney General Chris Koster will investigate Missouri’s only abortion center after the release of an undercover video that sparked an outcry, mainly from Republicans.

The video depicts Planned Parenthood’s national medical director discussing the disposition of parts from aborted fetuses. The Democrat on Tuesday announced the investigation, which follows national outcry mainly from Republicans.

Missouri’s Republican-led Senate will conduct an investigation into the facility as well. Republican Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey on Tuesday announced he formed a committee to investigate.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback wants the state to determine if Kansas abortion facilities take part in a fetal tissue program. Brownback’s office said Tuesday he wants the Kansas Board of Healing Arts and the state Department of Health and Environment to investigate whether any Kansas facility sells tissue and organs from aborted fetuses.

At issue is an undercover video released by anti-abortion activists showing Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical services discussing procedures for providing fetal body parts to researchers.

Planned Parenthood says it legally helps women who want to make not-for-profit donations of their fetus’ organs for scientific research.

Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri says the center doesn’t participate in the fetal program. It says calls for an investigation are about “political grandstanding.” Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
