Griffon volleyball downs Southern in final home match of 2011

The Missouri Western volleyball team won their final regular season home contest 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 25-20) against the Missouri Southern Lions. The Griffons hit .236 with 62 kills with four players recording double digit kills. Amanda Boender had career high 16 kills in the victory. Western improves to 14-15 overall and 7-9 in MIAA play.

Western dominated set one taking a commanding 18-11 lead after an attack error by the Lions. Western took set one 25-19 with Boender collecting six kills. Western got down in set two 15-11 after a Hannah Zimmerman attack error. It looked like the Lions were going to take set two leading 24-21 but five straight points by Western gave the Griffons the 26-24 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Lions used a 7-0 run midway through set three helping them to a 25-21 victory, but Western responded in set four with 19 kills hitting .405 taking the set 25-20 and the season series from the Lions.

Tahler Johnston, Alex Behnke and Zimmerman finished with 12, 11 and 10 kills respectively in their final home match of their careers. Stephanie Hattey had 47 set assists and 13 digs while Sarah Faubel chipped in 16 of the Griffons 69 digs.

The Lions were led by Katie Politte and Rachel Olinyk with 12 kills apiece while Sydney Potts had 36 set assists and 11 digs. The Lions fall to 5-23 on the season and 3-13 in MIAA action.

The Griffons hit the road for their final two matches of the regular season on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12. Western will take on the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Friday in Pittsburg, Kan. at 7:00 pm and will take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats on Saturday at 6:00 pm in Bolivar, Mo. concluding their season.
