The Saint Joseph Performing Arts Association and The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra have provided 30 ukuleles to students at Hosea Elementary School. Under the direction of Hosea music teacher Joshua Lock, the children will learn how to play the instrument and later this winter the students will audition for a spot to play with the orchestra while they are here in St. Joseph.
The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, one of the world’s foremost ukulele orchestras, hails from New Zealand and will be performing at the Missouri Theatre on Saturday, February 20.
The ukulele, an instrument which once brought to mind images of grass skirts and Tiny Tim tip-toeing through the tulips has had a recent revival in popularity and is played by, among others, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, and Ryan Gosling.
The Performing Arts Association thanks the David H. Morton Memorial Fund for the Arts along with private donations from our development drive and received grants which have provided funding for this workshop.
Tickets range in price from $12- $42 for the 2016 performance of The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra at the Missouri Theatre and can be purchased by phone at the Performing Arts Association, 816-279-1225 or at the office, 719 Edmond Street or online: saintjosephperformingarts.org.
