First Round of Women’s MIAA Tournament in the books

riggertMIAAKansas City, Mo. – Three of the four higher seeds advanced in the opening round of the MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Monday night as the scene will shift to Kansas City for Thursday and the quarterfinals.

#6 Missouri Southern 73,  #11 Northeastern State 55

Sixth seeded Missouri Southern shot .520 from the field and .500 from behind the three-point line as they eliminated 11th seed Northeastern State 73-55 in the opening round of the MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

For the Lions Kayla Kivinski led the way with 15 points while Deb Holcomb added 13 points. Dru Clark had 12 points and Jenson Maydew added 11 points while Kenya Wilson-Brown dished out a game high six assists.

For the RiverHawks Caley Shaffstall led the way with 13 points while Kate Bellamy finished with 10 points on the night.

MSSU advances to Kansas City where they will face third seeded Fort Hays State at 12 noon on March 3 from Municipal Auditorium.

#10 Central Missouri 74, #7 Washburn 70

Tenth seeded Central Missouri outscored seventh seeded Washburn 19-13 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 74-70 win in the first round of the MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

For the Jennies Shelby Winkelmann led the way with 22 points while dishing out four assists. Paige Redmond finished with 16 points, Ashley Jones added 11 points and Tayler Weiks had 10 points.

For the Ichabods Erika Lane had 22 points and Alyxis Bowens had 19 points while Jayna Smith pulled down 10 rebounds.

UCM will face second seeded Pittsburg State at 2:15 p.m. on March 3 from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

#8 Nebraska-Kearney 75, #9 Southwest Baptist 46

Eighth seeded Nebraska-Kearney used a 23-8 second quarter to earn the 75-46 victory over ninth seed Southwest Baptist in the opening round of the MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

For the Lopers Laramey Becker had a team best 18 points and pulled down six rebounds as Bri Starks added 14 points. McKenzie Brown finished with 12 points while Alexa Hogberg had 11 points and dished out six assists.

For the Bearcats Caylee Richardson and Dilonna Johnson each had 11 points as Johnson pulled down a team best six boards.

UNK advances to Kansas City where they will take on top seeded Missouri Western at 6 p.m. on March 3 from Municipal Auditorium.

#5 Central Oklahoma 71, #12 Lindenwood 56

Fifth seeded Central Oklahoma outscored 12th seed Lindenwood 24-8 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 71-56 victory in the first round of the MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

For the Bronchos McKenzie Solberg led the way with 21 points while Jordan Ward dished out a game high seven assists. Oliva Mason added 17 points and eight rebounds with Julia Mason finished with 10 points.

For the Lions Kassidy Gengenbacher finished with 13 points, Kyle Ferguson added 11 points and Vanessa Zailo pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.

UCO will face fourth seeded Emporia State in the quarterfinal round at 8:15 p.m. on March 3 from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
