(Update 4:28 p.m. AP and POST) – A manhunt is over after officers shoot man who shot a Kansas City, Kan. detective.

The Kansas City Police Dept. tweeted shortly before 3 p.m. that an officer-involved shooting took place at Bannister and 71 Highway with the man believed to be the suspects in the shooting of the detective.  During that time 71 highway was closed at that location.

Police spokesman Patrick McCallop said earlier in the day that the detective was shot about 12:30 p.m. Monday after the detective, in an unmarked car, helped respond to a report of a suspicious person. McCallop said that’s when the man ran into a field and exchanged gunfire with the detective, wounding him at least twice.

McCallop said the shooter fled in the detective’s car, then carjacked a vehicle with two children inside. That vehicle later was found in nearby Basehor, and the children were unharmed.

The Kansas City Star is reporting that the detective has died at the hospital several hours after being shot.  The suspect was reported by the Star to be in stable condition.
