Mermaids and sea creatures will take to the frozen waters in a spring production at Bode Ice Arena next week.
The St. Joseph Figure Skating Club presents “The Little Mermaid, Under the Frozen Sea” on Friday, May 20, Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22.
The three shows will feature 78 local performers from the figure skating club and the city of St. Joseph’s Learn to Skate program. Audiences will see elaborate skating routines that showcase the singing mermaid Ariel, the evil sea witch Ursula and a host of fish and crustaceans.
“We’ve had good shows in the past, but I feel this is going to top them all,” said Debbie Cole-Gerber, the show director in St. Joseph. “The sets are bigger. The props are more in-depth. There’s a lot more that went into it.”
With familiar songs like “Storm at Sea” and “Kiss the Girl,” audiences will find that this mermaid story translates easily to the ice, Cole-Gerber said.
“When they did it on Broadway, they did it on roller-skates,” she said.

Special performers will include both the beginner and advanced Griffon Gliders synchronized skating teams from St. Joseph. Skaters come from schools across the St. Joseph area.
All performances are held at Bode Ice Arena, 2500 Southwest Parkway, in St. Joseph. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, May 20; 7 p.m., Saturday, May 21; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22.
Tickets are $7 for ages 13 and up, $3 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for anyone age 3 and younger. Tickets can be purchased by calling 816-271-5506 or contacting Cole-Gerber at [email protected]. Tickets also can be purchased at the door prior to each show.
