Officer injured, one person shot, during 2nd night of violence in Charlotte

Charlotte (AP)“My heart bleeds for what our great city is going through.” That’s what North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory told WBTV-TV about the two nights of violence in Charlotte after the fatal police shooting of a black man.

McCrory has declared a state of emergency and is sending in the National Guard.

One person was shot Wednesday during a second night of protests over the police shooting. The person, who was not identified, is in critical condition and on life support, according to an announcement on Twitter from the city. Earlier, the city had tweeted that the person had died. Officials say the person was shot by another civilian.

One police officer was injured, according to a city tweet. The officer was transported to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The riot and protests came on a day in which the city’s police chief gave more details on the shooting that took the life of Keith Lamont Scott. Police say 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott had a gun when a police officer shot him Tuesday. Neighbors say Scott was holding a book, not a gun.
