A Kansas City man was killed in a crash in Doniphan County Saturday evening.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Richard D. Smith, 43 of Severance was driving a 2008 Silverado Pickup eastbound on US 36 Highway about a half mile east of south 1st St. in Wathena shortly before 6 p.m.  The patrol said Antonio Santiago-Hernandez, 38 of Kansas City was driving a 993 Nissan King Cab Pickup westbound on 36 Hwy when for some unknown reason Santiago-Hernandez crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and hit Smith’s vehicle head-on.

Santiago-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.  Smith was taken to KU Medical Center for treatment.  Three other passengers in Smith’s vehicle, Katie Smith, 33 and two children ages 9 and 10 were transported to Mosaic Life Care for treatment.
