(Update 1:55 p.m.) – A St. Joseph man has been taken into custody after a standoff in an east-side neighborhood.
Shorty before 9 a.m. Friday Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department said officers responded to the area in reference to a domestic assault after a woman allegedly texted 911 for assistance.
“At the time we responded they attempted to make contact with the occupants of the house. The house was closed up and the subject barricaded inside the house,” Wilson said. “Some information came in that there may possibly we weapons inside the house so we had SRT team come in.”
A woman eventually came out of the house located in the area of Basil Drive and Carol Drive (near Frederick and Riverside Road). Police continued negotiations with a man inside. More than four hours after police arrived on scene SRT breached a window of the home and took a 36-year-old man into custody. No injuries were reported.
Erica Moss lives in the duplex next door to the home surrounded by police. She said she had gotten her older children onto the school bus and had gone back to sleep with her baby when she got a call from a private number shortly before 10 a.m.
“It was the police department telling me they were cops and that they needed to get me out of the house. As soon as I walked out of the hallway they were right there,” Moss said. “They made sure that we were shielded to my car and got out of here.”
Police are continuing to investigate.
