R. Brien Boggess
1939-2017
R. Brien Boggess, 78, passed away August 27 at the home. Brien was
born June 30, 1939 to Bennie and Aileen (O’Brien) Boggess.
Born and raised in Kansas City, MO., Brien graduated from Rockhurst
High School and the University of Kansas with a BA in Education. He was a
member of the KU Golf Team for Three years.
Brien began his golfing career as the head professional at the
Jefferson City Country Club. From there, he became the head golf pro at
Indian Hills Country Club, to co-professional with his father. He also
worked at the St. Louis Country Club before finishing his career at the St.
Joseph Country Club as the head golf professional and general manager.
His love of teaching golf was evident in the many years of
volunteering at Coleman Elementary and Oak Grove Schools. One of his
proudest accomplishments was being recognized as the St. Joseph School
District volunteer of the year in 2017. He also was active in the PGA
Junior Golf program.
Brien was also very involved in the Midwest Section of the
Professional Golf Association, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame
for his dedication, contribution and Love to the game of golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in- law Gene
Smith.
Survivors include his lifemate, Marcia Boggess of the home; daughters,
Tracie Hicks, St. Joseph and Terrie Campbell (Danny), Columbia, MO; sister,
Marilyn Kay Smith, K.C.; brother, Barry Boggess, Prairie Village, KS.;
grandson, Shayne Peters, Tampa, FL.; and nephews and their families.
Mass of Christian Burial 1:00 P.M. Saturday, St. Francis Xavier
Parish. Inurnment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with
friends 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.

Stephanie Kaye Hoskins
1978-2017
Stephanie Kaye (Bloomfield) Hoskins, 38 of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home, on August 27, 2017. She was born October 20, 1978, in St. Joseph. She is survived by her husband, Roy Hoskins, whom she married in Virginia Beach on September 8, 2007, and her son, Dylan Kirkpatrick of St. Joseph, additional survivors: her father, Steve Roach, siblings; Jerry Crail, Mike Crail, Jeff Bloomfield, and Cindy Hollander, parents-in-law; Jerry and Kathy Hoskins, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carolyn “Susie” Bloomfield and her brother-in-law, Lucas Hoskins. Stephanie graduated from Missouri Western State College with a degree in Criminal Justice and had a long, fulfilling career with the Missouri Juvenile Court System and ending where she began, at the Juvenile Assessment Center, after becoming supervisor there. Stephanie especially loved to travel and wanted to see many more places. She will be missed by her two dogs, Brady and Carlee. Just as Stephanie wanted, there will be a memorial service celebrating her life, on 10 am, Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Keys Christian Fellowship, 6002 South 9th St. St. Joseph, Missouri, all are welcome to attend. Memorials are requested to the American Lung Association.
Thomas “Sparky” Lee McDowell
1942-2017
Thomas “Sparky” Lee McDowell 74, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday August 29, 2017 at a Saint Joseph, MO health care center. He was born October 26, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri son of the late Hazel & Harry McDowell. He graduated from Benton High School and worked at the St. Joseph News Press as a Route Driver over 21 years he also worked at Heartland coach company. He enjoyed fishing, car racing, and the CB Radio. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren, Lyndy and Taylor Ashler and his companion, Pamelia Ashler. He is survived by daughters, Larine (Richard) Palmer, Tina (Randy Jr.) Hatton, Laura McDowell, stepdaughters, Annette Keithley, Michelle (Ralph) Pyles, stepson, Chris (Kandy) Ashler, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brothers, Danny (Dorothy) McDowell, Dennis McDowell, and Steve McDowell, sisters, Judith Wesley, and Barbara Keehn. as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Saturday, with memorial services starting at 2:00 pm Saturday at the Rupp Funeral Home. He has been cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.
Opal Pierce
1927-2017
Opal was born in the rurals of Leonardville, Kansas. She was the seventh child of George and Hulda (Ekstrom) Rosell.
Opal was married on December 22, 1948 to Gerald Pierce who preceded her in death on January 29, 2002. They were both known for their avid love of the Bible. They enjoyed visiting many people in the community and Doniphan County area by means of their door to door activity as Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include three daughters: Susan (Lester) Peuker, Connie Leatherman, Mary (Ray) Merten and three sons: Dow (Diane) Pierce, G.E. (Sheryl) Pierce and Jesse (Michelle) Pierce and several grandchildren as well as several great-grandchildren.
The body has been cremated.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to either Wathena Nursing Home Activities Department or The Worldwide Work of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Memorial Service: Saturday, September 9th at 10:00 A.M. with visitation to follow at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Troy, Kansas.

Veronica Leeann Cook
1993-2017
Veronica Leeann Cook
June 22, 1993 – August 9, 2017
Veronica was born in Kansas City Missouri and lived most of her life in St Joseph Missouri.
Veronica was a special gift to those who knew and loved her. She had the best heart and would give everything she had to anyone who would ask without hesitation. She had a pure and innocent spirit that saw only the best.
On November 27, 2005 Veronica was Baptized at Grace Evangelical Church in St Joseph Mo. This began her close relationship with God that continued for the rest of her life.
Veronica’s happiest school years occurred while attending Mid-Buchanan High School in Faucett Mo. She excelled at cross country, lettering and winning many medals. Veronica was very proud of her accomplishments in track and enjoyed being part of the team. Those were very special times for her.
Veronica also enjoyed volunteering and helping others. She volunteered with the Special Olympics and United Cerebral Palsy. Veronica had the wonderful ability to connect with others and form genuine bonds.
Veronica enjoyed traveling. She loved going to Washington DC and seeing the White House. She also enjoyed spending time with extended family at the beach in Hatteras NC. Veronica loved the ocean.
Veronica also loved babies. If a baby with in the room it would not take long before Veronica would have them in her arms. Veronica had no children of her own but was a loving Aunt to her niece and nephews, Kylee, Kayden and baby Bubba.
Veronica spent time many different places throughout her short life, leaving most better than she found them. Even if you knew Veronica only briefly, she had a unique way of squirming into your heart and staying there, even after she had moved on.
Veronica was a good kid with the most pure, most genuine heart and she will be missed.
She was here. She mattered.
Veronica is survived by her siblings, Aimee Mechelle Beaman-Cook (fiancé Kurtis Garr) St Joseph MO, Kevin James Donovan Jr., Damien Anthony Donovan, Harold James Donovan and Joshua Alan Donovan
Veronica is also survived by Patricia Cook (fiancé Jim Cox) St Joseph MO, Sharon Clark St Joseph MO and many extended family and friends who cared for and prayed for Veronica during her short time here.
Veronica was preceded in death by a brother Jeffery D Smith.
Denise M. Streit
1953-2017
HOLTON – Denise M. Streit, 63, of Holton, died Friday, August 25, 2017 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
She was born November 24, 1953, in Holton, the daughter of John and Ada Marie Boyce Winters. She graduated from Holton High School in 1971. She served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1984 to 1990 and was a member of the American Legion. Denise loved to hunt and fish.
In her early years Denise had worked at the Trails Truck Stop in Holton. She later worked for KNI in Topeka, at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department as the Dispatch Supervisor, and was an EMT for Medcare Ambulance Service in Holton. Her last job before having to retire because of her health was as a truck driver for Swift Trucking Company.
She married Herbert Streit on December 21, 1976 at the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton. He survives, of the home.
Denise was preceded in death by her parents, her son, David Streit and her sister, Karla Grau.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kerry Becker and husband Justin, Holton; two brothers, John “Butch” Winters, Topeka and James Winters, Soldier; one grandson, Micah Becker, and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 2nd at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will follow in the Holton Cemetery. Denise will lie in state Friday at the funeral home where family and friends will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Heart of Jackson Humane Society or the American Diabetes Association, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Carolyn Sue Taylor
1940-2017
Carolyn Sue Taylor 77, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 24, 2017 in a Saint Joseph health care center. She was born March 29, 1940 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Virginia and John Miller. She graduated from Benton High School, and she was a homemaker. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed cooking, gardening, planting flowers, and taking care of the yard. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Johnny Miller. Survivors include daughter, Connie (Michael) Ide, son, Ronnie (Donna) Taylor, daughter, Nancy Taylor all of St. Joseph, MO, and grandchild, Bobbie Jo Powers.
Graveside Funeral Services and Interment will be conducted on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Monday at the Rupp Funeral Home.
Sister Mary Obear, OSB
1922-2017
Sister Mary Benet Obear, OSB, 95, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Friday, August 25, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Sunday, August 27 at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Monday, August 28 at 10:30 a.m.
Sister Mary Benet Obear was the third of five children born to Alice and Howard Obear in Chicago, Ill. After graduating from St. Scholastica Academy in Chicago, she worked as an airline hostess and secretary. She entered the Benedictine sisters in Atchison in 1947 and professed monastic vows in 1948. She taught grade school and high school from 1948-1969. She earned a master of science degree in chemistry and math from Marquette University and a master’s degree in gerontology from the University of Arizona. She worked as an activity director at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Rockhill Care Center in Kansas City. Mo. She was also director of pastoral care at a nursing home in Tucson, Ariz., for three years. From 1981-95, she taught math and tutored students at Donnelly College. After retiring, Sister Mary Benet worked in the monastery library.
Sister Mary Benet was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Howard Obear, by her four siblings: Howard Obear Jr., Jane Leiser, Peter Obear and Bettie Obear. Sister Kathleen Egan, OSB
1915-2017
Sister Kathleen (Mary Janice) Egan, OSB, 102, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Sunday, 27 Aug, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Monday, August 28 at 10:30 a.m.
Sister Kathleen was born in Wales, England, to Jeremiah and Mary Agnes Ahern-O’Sullivan Egan on March 13, 1915. The family moved to New York in 1927. After four years as a social worker in New York City, she entered the Mount community in 1941. She served over 50 years at Mount St. Scholastica College, which became Benedictine College, as a professor of speech and drama and later college librarian. She retired from Benedictine College as professor emerita in 1971, and in 1980, received the Offeramus Award, an honor bestowed by the college on an outstanding alumna.
She and her sister Eileen were friends of St. Teresa of Calcutta; together they wrote three books about her. A friend also of Dorothy Day, Sister Kathleen started several initiatives for the poor of Atchison and beyond. She belonged to professional associations and peace organizations and was a charter member of the American Benedictine Academy. She affirmed the gifts of others and was able to draw out gifts they did not believe they had. Among her students was Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai. Her polite gentle approach was tenacious and persistent in matters of peacemaking and of justice for the poor.
Sister Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, by her brothers James and Brother John Mark, F.C.F., and her sister Eileen Egan. She is survived by her sister Mabel Gil, Albany, N.Y., brother Jerome Egan, New York, N.Y., nieces and nephews, and her monastic family. Glen “Jake” Fraser
1927-2017
HOLTON – Glen “Jake” Fraser, 90, of Holton, formerly of Fairview and Hiawatha, died Friday, August 25, 2017 at his home.
He was born January 7, 1927 in rural Fairview, the son of John Henry and Mildred Jennifer Houlett Fraser.
Jake left high school early to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a machinist’s mate and later joined the Navy Seabees where he learned to operate heavy equipment. He used this training when he returned to civilian life working as a heavy equipment operator for Local 101, Operating Engineers, retiring in 1989.
He married Nancy Carol Ham on March 28, 1952 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She died July 18, 2013.
Jake was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Jean Zimmerman, Jerald Fraser, Shirley Babb and Janice Kathrens.
Survivors include his children, Jay Glen Fraser, David Wynn Fraser and Jennifer Louise Shaw and husband Bruce, all of Holton, and Timothy Lynn Fraser, Hiawatha, three sisters, Joan Hall, Holton, Mary Kleppee, Hiawatha and Betty Adams, Central Point, OR; and one grandson, Christopher Fraser, in Georgia.
Cremation is planned. A service to honor both Jake and Nancy will be held in Hiawatha and will be announced at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Heart of Jackson Humane Society, and may be sent in care of the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1034, Holton, 66436.
