Patrick Eugene Owens
1967-2017
Patrick Eugene Owens 50, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at his home. He was born April 22, 1967 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Patricia and Larry Owens. He worked at Liberty Fruit in the production department. He was a Ham Radio, and C.B radio operator known as “Big Rick”. He enjoyed restoring cars and collecting model cars and Hot Wheels, he was a Christian. Patrick was preceded in death by father, Larry Owens. Survivors include, mother, Patricia “Tricia” Owens of the home, aunts, Jean Ezzell and Nadine Kepner, St. Joseph, MO, uncle, J.T. Adair, brother, Roy James, Springfield, step brother, Ronald C. Smith Jr., St. Joseph, former daughter in law, Naomi Bird, St. Joseph, MO, nieces, Zaynikka and Ziesha, nephews, Zarien and Nikko.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm Thursday, with funeral services to be conducted at 3:00 pm, on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Mr. Owens will be cremated following the funeral service.
Ernest D. “Ernie” Roland
1917/2017
Ernest “Ernie” Doyle Rowland, of Hiawatha, was born March 2, 1917, at Barnesdoll near Bartlesville, Oklahoma, one of four children born to Elmer and Delmalutha “Delma” Spyres Rowland. Ernie died Monday evening, September 18, 2017, at Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Hiawatha. He celebrated his 100th birthday in March.
Ernie’s family moved to Stillwater when he was a youngster and grew up and attended schools there, graduating from Stillwater High school with the class of 1936. He attended A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) for a time. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Europe, landing at Normandy; France after the D-Day beachhead had been secured, with the 80th Infantry Division “Blue Ridge Mountain Boys,” until being wounded in the “Battle of the Bulge.” He later was transferred to the 1st Infantry Division “Big Red One”, and was assigned to the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany as a Military Policeman, during the war trails. He was discharged at the rank of sergeant in 1946. Ernie returned to Oklahoma where he worked as a foreman for Fairmont Creamery in the poultry division for 17 years, first at Guthrie, OK and later Alliance, NE. He later worked for the USDA Poultry Division grading branch as an inspector, specializing in egg products in Hutchinson, Topeka, prior to transferring to Hiawatha. He received several citations and awards in this work prior to retiring in 1984.
Mr. Rowland was a longtime member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Hiawatha; the Odd Fellows Lodge; the Homer-White Post #66 American Legion – Hiawatha; a life time member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post in Kansas City, MO; a life member of the Disabled Veterans of America (DAV) and the Hiawatha McDonald’s Coffee Club. Since the Rowland’s lived, next door to Bethany United Church of Christ, they attended there at times through the years. In his younger years, while he and Marcedes lived in Wichita, he was also a volunteer fire fighter. Ernie was on the Board of Directors for many years for Living Waters Ranch, on Tuttle Creek Reservoir near Osceloa, KS. Ernie enjoyed fishing, camping, and being outdoors enjoying God’s Creation.
He married Marcedes Thelma White at Stillwater, OK, in 1937. They lived in various places due to Ernie’s work, settling in Hiawatha in the fall of 1971, where they raised their son Mark, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Marcie died on September 14th 1999. Ernie continued to live at home on Shawnee Street, until moving to Maple Heights two years ago.
Survivors include their son Mark Edgar Rowland of Roswell, New Mexico; two grandchildren: Lukas Kyle Rowland of Montreal, Canada and Kiera Elise Rowland of Arnaudville, LA; several nieces and nephews.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Delma; two sisters Lucille of Guthrie, OK and Mildred of Cushing, OK, and a brother Carl of Leadville, CO, who was a Marine survivor of the December 7th 1941, Attack on Pearl Harbor.
A Celebration of Ernie’s life is planned for 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Shane Spangler and Bill Worcester, to officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 21. The family will meet with friends one half hour prior to services.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard, sent in care of the funeral home.
Robert M. “Bob” Parks
1924-2017
Hiawatha, KS Robert M. “Bob” Parks, 92, of Hiawatha, died with family by his side, Tuesday morning, September 19, 2017, at his home.
Among survivors are his wife Patricia of the home.
Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M., followed by the family receiving friends until 8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Friday, September 22, with Father Dan Gardner as celebrant. Cremation will follow mass with private family inurnment at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Laura Bartlett
1931-2017
Laura M. “Peg” Bartlett, 86, of Atchison, KS, passed away Monday, September 18, 2017 at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.
Memorial service will be 11:00 AM Friday, September 22, 2017 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS, with Rev. Nancy J Kollhoff. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be 9:00 AM Tuesday September 26, 2017 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Peg was born on February 25, 1931, in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of William “Bill” and Catherine (Upchurch) Roe. Her family had many moves until settling in Shawnee Mission. Peg graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1949; she then attended Baker University in Baldwin, KS for a year then Kansas University for a year. Peg worked for her father at Bill Roe Café which is where she met the love of her life, Bob Bartlett. Together they had six children. Peg worked as a secretary for North West Mutual of KCMO before becoming a stenographer for them. She enjoyed playing bridge, liked going to the casino, and enjoyed spending time and boating at Bean Lake during the summer. Peg was the recreation director for Atchison when she first moved to town and also worked in the kitchen at USD 409 school district.
Peg married Robert Eugene ‘Bob’ Bartlett on August 31, 1951; he preceded her in death on June 11, 2010.
Survivors include three sons; Jim and Jane Bartlett, Atchison, KS, Tom and Kim Bartlett, Atchison, KS, Steve and Karen Bartlett, Camden Point, MO, two daughters; Margo and Dave Schuler, Severance, CO, Sandy and Mark Dennis, Oakley, KS, a brother Bill and Donna Roe, Atchison, KS, eighteen grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren a sister in law, Leni Roe, Lawrence, KS.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, David Bartlett, a brother George Roe and a sister; Frances Roe.
Cecil Reid Swink
1924-2017
Cecil Reid Swink, 92, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Monday, September 18, 2017, at a health care facility.
He was born September 28, 1924 in Helena, Missouri to James and Margaret (Selecman) Swink. Cecil was their 13th child.
Cecil attended Black Oak Country School, and then later went to Union Star High School where he graduated in 1942.
He served in the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II. When Cecil returned home, he and Ida Ellen Smith married on December 21, 1946, she survives of the home. They farmed two farms near King City, Missouri before moving into town where they raised four children.
Cecil was a member of the First Baptist Church in King City, Missouri.
He retired from American Family Insurance, St. Joseph, Missouri after over 30 years. He was the lead printer; printing letter heads, etc for the company.
Cecil was always a farmer. He loved being out in his garden, he planted one every year. Guess he just loved to play in the dirt!
He was preceded in death by his parents; eleven brothers and sisters.
Additional survivors include daughter, Joyce Lowrance (Gary), Savannah, Missouri; sons, Dale Swink (Rebecca), Meridian, Idaho, Dennis Swink (Mary), Dwaine Swink, Savannah, Missouri; sister, Henrietta Fair, Savannah, Missouri; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandsons; numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan R. Coté
1924-2017
Joan R. Coté, 93, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017, at her home.
She was born July 30, 1924, in Dawson, Iowa, to Gustav W. Kruta and Edna M. Miner.
Joan married J. Conrad Coté May 18, 1946. He preceded her in death August 17, 2009.
She worked for Crouch Brothers and later at Industrial Heating (IHP) and retired in 1986. She was a member of the St. Joseph Cathedral Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society.
Joan was an avid bridge and pitch player. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, traveling, and visiting her children and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and eldest son, Joseph (J.C.) Conrad Coté II.
Survivors include her children, Vicki Ortman (Kenneth), Dana Coté (Susan), and Eric Coté (Linda); seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Orion “Bud” Williams, Jr.
1925-2017
HOYT – Orion “Bud” Williams, Jr., 92, of Hoyt, died Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Manor Care Health Services in Topeka.
He was born July 2, 1925 at Hoyt, the son of Orion and Margaret Evans Williams. He graduated from Hoyt High School in 1943. After high school he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as an aircraft mechanic.
After the service, Bud farmed and worked as a mechanic at various shops. He then worked as a mechanic for OHSE Meat Company and also drove their trucks. In 1972 he moved his family to Big Bear Lake, California where they operated a Dinner House for seven years. They moved back to Hoyt in 1979 and Bud went to work for the State of Kansas as a heating and air mechanic for the Capitol Complex.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta and Mayetta Knights of Columbus Council No. 9535. Bud had served as president of the Hoyt United Cemetery Board since 1992. He was a Boy Scout Leader, served on the Hoyt Rural School Board, was a long time member of the Capitol City Gun Club and a trap shooting enthusiast, and was a member of a horseback square dance club. He enjoyed gardening and training his hunting dogs
He married Beth Eileen Housh on September 12, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa. She survives, of the home.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Danny Williams and two sisters, Mary Creason and Grace Rohr.
Other survivors four sons, William Roy Williams (Mary), Lakewood, CO, Bernard Orion Williams (Carla), Lawrence, Bradley Joseph Williams (Debbie), Scottsdale, AZ and Bruce Leo Williams (Taunya), Phillipsburg; a brother, George F. Williams (Pat), Topeka, ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 25th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta. Burial with military honors will follow in the Hoyt Cemetery. Bud will lie in state from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and after 10:00 a.m. Sunday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home, followed by visitation until 8:00.
