Adopt-A-Family program to begin accepting Christmas applications

The AFL-CIO Community Service’s Adopt-A-Family program will begin accepting applications for Christmas assistance next week.

According to a news release, applications will be accepted starting Wednesday and will continue to be accepted through Saturday, Dec. 2. The agency said time frames are:

Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday Nov. 18 & Dec. 2, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (by appointment only)

“The program’s goal is to serve everyone who needs assistance during the holiday season. It is designed to match needy families and individuals in the area with families, groups and organizations that are willing to help so everyone can enjoy the Christmas holidays,” said Penny Adams, Ex. Dir.

Applicants should apply at the AFL-CIO Community Services building at 1203 N 6th, St Joseph, MO. They are required to bring the following information and all documents must be for current or previous month.

Social Security cards for each member of household
Proof of all income — TANF, child support, SSI, social security, pensions, &/or earned wages, etc.
Utility bills — lights, gas, water, phone, trash, etc.
All other expenses — food, credit cards, prescriptions, etc.
Rent or mortgage receipt showing your name and address
Clothing and shoe sizes for every member of household
List of special foods, clothing or household needs
A wish list for Santa from each child (3 items maximum)
$2.00 processing fee

Applicants should not bring children when applying for the program.
