Snow and more freezing rain on the way tonight

Cold temperatures, and a breezy north wind, will make wind chill values this morning a bit cold; and with temperatures this afternoon only expected to top out in the low 30s ice from Tuesday is not expected to melt much, unless the sun comes out from behind the clouds. Another round of winter weather is expected to move into the area this evening, starting a few hours after sunset with the bulk of precipitation falling after midnight, through Thursday morning. The highest snowfall/sleet totals will be near the Iowa border, with around an inch possible. Farther south not as much sleet or snow is expected, but with ice already on many surfaces and trees, it may not take much to start causing issues by early Thursday morning. Temperatures will warm during the day Thursday. So, while the day may start with wintry weather, what precipitation is left in the region by the afternoon hours will change over to liquid rain. Here’s the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 30. North northeast wind 9 to 11 mph.

Tonight: Snow likely before 2 a.m., then snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain. Low around 24. East northeast wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday: Snow and freezing rain likely before 1 p.m., then a chance of freezing drizzle between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., then a chance of drizzle after 5 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 34. East wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday Night: A chance of drizzle before 5 a.m., then a slight chance of freezing drizzle. Cloudy, with a low around 30. East wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Friday: A slight chance of freezing drizzle before 7 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 43. Light and variable wind becoming north northwest around 5 mph.

Friday Night: A chance of rain before midnight, then a chance of freezing rain between midnight and 3 a.m., then a chance of rain after 3 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Saturday Night: A chance of rain and snow before midnight, then a chance of snow between midnight and 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 48.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 26.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 49.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 29.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 55.
